When did or when will Kawi and Suzuki put limiters on the 12R and Busa? What year for the model do they start if they have?

I take it you are fererring to "rev limiters" & do not have the answer. Do know that Yamaha was starting to put them into effect in '85 on some of their bikes such as the FZ-750 in that I found it on my FZ-750 yet not all for with my 87 Yamaha TZR-250 it is not there, but then this is a street replica of the TZ-250 road racer with 75% of the TZ-250 of past few yrs. My guess is the engineers/makers put on what was avaliable for on the TZF-250 it had automatic shut-off signal lights which had become popular in '74 & into the early 80s on Yamaha bikes.

NOPE

Actually Smitty I am refering to speed limiters, their were talking about restricting the bikes to 300 k's per hour and I was wondering if they did it or not and when.
But now that you brought it up I wouldn't mind learning the history of rev limiters.

The year was 2000. the 1999 Busas were not top speed limited but they do have specific ignition advance curves that limit power in lower gears. I'm pretty sure every 12R made has a governed top speed.

One thing that is interesting about the limiting devices........They are all voluntary. A company doesn't HAVE to put one on.

The German car companies have the same sort of "gentleman's agreement" at roughly 155mph or 250kph. (Porche doesn't "agree")

It's too bad that the companies caved in.

It would have been interesting to see Honda Kawa and Suzuki keep battling for the top spot. Anyone slse remember when the CBR1000F had the top spot at 161mph?

You are correct & yes they went into effect in '00. Germany simply told the big four in Japan Italy & others that they do it at the factory or they would do it in Germany along with other countries --------- so there it was. A proper factory job or a screw-up in a bike's warantee as someone else worked on it even even as it was just hauled out of the box & onto the dealers floors.

I agree that in most of one's riding they are not up to 3/4 or full chat in top cog. Same with my 600 as compared to my 929 & reason I will not waste money on a slip-on can so the bike will sound louder, for that money can go for tyres, oil, Kevlar lines, etc. Since I put my 600 at around the same pace as the 929 then it is working at slightly higher revs then normal, but if one likes bikes then they wil pick what they prefer & ride it with enjoyment.
I have two custom made .45 ACP Browning action semi-auto h/guns at 3 & 4 grand each. The lst built by the pistolsmith to what he felt would sell & latter built to my specs by the same pilstolsmith. Yet here in Cdn one cannot use a f/arm for self, home or family defense, but like good m/cs I use them at the range for limited target shooting which is at least once a week each week of the yr along with my own reloading. I sort of look upon f/arms & m/cs as being sort of the same in some ways.

so how often do you think you are gonna have the room to go 220 miles an hour....who really cares how fast a bike can top out at 170 is plenty fast for me and my fidy 4 :2cents:
Actually, there are a few places to try it out (even here in NY). The Speedo will be off by about 10-15%, but a top speed run can be done.

Not that I would endorse such an illegal activity, but.....let's be honest, we've all gone waaaaaaaay too fast on the highway at some point.

What bugs me is that the GSXR1000's speedo will stop counting at 186, no matter how much faster you try to go. Even in kph, it will stop at 299. (This was ....uhhh....done on a closed course under ....uh controlled conditions and NOT on Ocean Parkway behind Jones Beach)

haha sweet, i have had the 954 up to about 176 indicated and then i let off......a flash or something told me your skin is important to you....haha

Rundog you also forgot to tell others that the bends come up so quickly they are a bit of a task to manage & what was a smooth road has become quite bumpy. Not to mention that dot off to the right is actually a cage, them possibly more then one & as you start to brake & gear down you soon find out it was a road block due to some work being done just beside the road & said "dot" was actually a number cars & big dump trucks across the road!!!

I Agree with Smitty

Well I think the issue should not be "How fast do you need?" It's should not be a factor controled by the government or manufacturers. Whats next? 200 K's or maybe 10 years from now all vehicles will be restricted from the factory to the speed limit? How would you like that? Not very much I bet.
Same deal with guns, just because someone doesn't like the idea of an automatic or semi automatic rifle doesn't mean that they should take away my right to own and operate such a firearm. Any kind of retrictions on our freedoms are bad, and one leads to another.

All quite true, Smitty... If I were to actually do this, I would pick a stretch of road that I was intimately familiar with, one with no entrances or intersections. I would then ride down it at moderate speed to check for new potholes or trash, and to warn the local wildlife. Then I would go back up it again at a higher speed to verify the bike was ready before the final run. Lastly of all, I wouldn't make an everyday habit of it.

I'm finishing up my contract with NASA here today. I'm going to miss working here, and I'm going to miss my colleagues, but most of all I think I'll miss all of these beautiful, empty roads.

We have a tunnel that's 1.1mile, straight, good pavement, well lit, and often empty late night. That's the only place I go for a top speed run. No cross traffic, wildlife, etc.:)

High-speed stopping distance

And no place for cops to hide. Sounds like a great spot. :D

I think some riders underestimate stopping distances at extreme speeds. Under the best conditions, most sportbikes can stop from 60mph in 120ft, excluding reaction time. From 150mph, that becomes 750ft. Add 1 second reaction time and it increases to nearly 1000ft. But you're not likely to make a perfect stop in an emergency, so if you're going to run 150, you need a minimum of 1/4-mile of unimpeded roadway in front of you—no intersections, driveways, or other potential hazard. And you should be scanning well beyond that, because basically all you can do about a hazard any closer is to reduce impact speed.

Been there.

Yes I have been there to that tunnel with my truck. Damn everyone failed to mention one really great thing about the tunnel, and thats the sound. I can just imagine the beautiful sound that our bikes would make going through that tunnel.....
Now it's on my list of things to do.

Say, Dad, don't they have video in those tunnels? Not that they'd have time to focus on you! Be lookin' for ya on one of those 'Americas' Wildest...' shows!
Yes they have video but it's only for traffic observation. They aren't allowed to use video for enforcement... yet.:thumb: :D

There are several tunnels in the area but the good one is one of the two that cut through Mt. Washington to the South Hills. It's called the Liberty tunnel. It's flat and straight enough to see virtually the whole way through. If there's nothing there, let 'er rip! The other one on the by-pass crests in the middle and as a result has a limited sight line plus there's usually traffic even late at night.
