All you zx6r riders out there... I have a new 2001 zx6r with 500 miles on it. Yesterday I was sitting in traffic and the digital temp gauge went up to 220. I pulled over and let it cool down, then drove to the dealer. He said 220 was OK. He said 230 might be a concern, and 240 would be a problem. Today I was sitting in traffic again for about 5 - 10 min. (Long Island traffic sucks) and again it went up to 223 and stayed there. After I shut off the bike, the fan stayed on for about a minute. If I can get moving again the bike temp goes down to about 170 - 180.

Is this normal? Do your bikes run this hot? Can this damage the engine? I used to have an air-cooled Bandit that didn't run this hot. What gives?

Thanks,

My '01 6R runs about the same temp as yours. Sitting in traffic on a warm day it's around 215-225 (fan usually kicks on around 220 but doesn't really cool it down much...just keeps it from getting any hotter). When cruising along it's between 160-190 depending on speed. I'd say that you're right in the ballpark for tempature though, around 220 should be fine, 230 is pushing it, over 240 then pull over and let it cool.
If I read the manual correctly the LCD for temp will register up to 243 (if temp is showing or 248 if clock...that might be backwards though) then it will display "HI" and trigger the 'too hot' LED (right next to the tach.)...if this happens then shut down immediatly, otherwise you should be ok.

As long as your warning light is not on your bike is fine. My bike does the same thing and as long as your fan works it wont get any hotter than about 225

5'4" ZX-6R rider--seat shaving question

I am 5'4" and love my 6R. Thinking of shaving the foam down on the seat so I can get my feet flat on the ground (I'm wearing boots with 1" heel now). Anyone done this? Any recommendations?
