Look on the tag on the right frame spar near the steering head tube. There usually is a date of manufacture printed on it like 10/97, 8/95. Thats the year of the bike. Usually for Yamaha the next model year begins in October of the preceding year. So a 10/96 is a 97 model while a 9/96 is a 96 model. I dont know how they list the year on the engine ID number (the 4HR you listed). My 97's is 4LE-xxxxxx. Email Yamaha. they could tell you more.

The prefixes have nothing to do with it.

Look at the TENTH digit of the VIN number. It will be a letter. That letter will tell you the model year. This applies to ALL vehicles with a 17-digit VIN.

P = 93
R = 94
S = 95
T = 96
V = 97
W = 98
