I bought a Kawasaki Ninja 500R to learn on but almost instantly after I reached the end of the break in period (1000mi) it felt like it wasn't enough. I got onto riding pretty quickly. I was told by the person I bought it from basically that I would wreck if I went straight out on the road with it, but after about 5 minutes of piddling around in the parking lot I was fine to ride it home. Should I be beaten for thinking I can handle a larger bike sometime in the near future?

Hit the twisties for a couple thouthand miles. If you are as quick with it as you say you are, it wont take you long.
Maybe borrow a friends bike and see which ones you like best.

So it's not like riding a completely different machine? It's more like the same thing but everything is just more touchy and precise?

That a fairly good description. Its the same only more of it. And a great deal less forgiving.
