Well this is a new one... Over the weekend
I was on my way up north and I was practicing
rolling stoppies...

I came in at about 80mph, hit the brakes to
bottom out the suspension, then stood up and
tapped them a little more to get the rear
to lift. It came right up to the balance
point and then something very odd happened.

It's difficult to describe however the best
way to put it is that I got an inverted tank
slapper. The bike started waving back and
forth over the triple tree - The WHOLE frame
left and right - left then right - at a very
fast frequency. I let off the brakes and
dropped it. Very very strange... I could
feel the front end oscillating but the forces
coming from the front end were transfered
into the frame.

Anyone else out there with this one?!!
Pretty damn strange... Never happened before
and I am quite curious - what the hell was
that all about?!

Woooooooooow. An 80-mph rolling stoppie.......will you sign my bike, please? I can lift the rear wheel about 6 inches off the ground when stopping from about 7 mph. Does that count? Sometimes, I even don't cry from fright afterwards. Las Vegas Extremes? We don't need no stinkin' Las Vegas Extremes....we have Chris.

I'm sure someone w/an engineering degree, a $45,000 CAD/CAM computer and a whole lot of free time could answer your question properly. Good luck! I'm still stuck on what helmet to get..........I feel like such a looooooooooooooser! Cheers!

Actually, I've pulled about a two-foot stoppie. Just once, by accident. After riding my girlfriends' fathers' old POS Midnight Special 1200. (1200 CC's of fart power, but no go-power!) I got back on my bike and while coming to a stop sign, grabbed the front brake like I was grabbing the front brake on the other bike. I nearly soiled myself. It was funny as sh*t though. Afterwards, that is, it was funny. Not so funny while it was happening! Have a great day.

Chris, my first thought is relative to the rear tire and if it is out of balance. But, it seems like if it was, you'd notice it while the tire was on the ground. I dunno.

Maybe the rear wheel is cracked and out of alignment, and getting ready to explode! ;)

Ok so i dont know why your bike did that and im not a stunts guy. But you seem like a good person to ask this to. When the front tire comes back down from a wheelie does the bar allways give a little shake? I was in a spirited group ride on some hills and was having a blast with how easy the front went up going over a hill. But every time i set her down there would be a little shake. I wouldnt even call it a wheelie, just a little 2-3 inch lift for a sec.

Chris do you have your own fan club like the LA Extreme guys?
How do I sign up to be a grouppie? Can I wear a tank top and a miniskirt?

The Toy - Yes you will get a little 'wobble'
in the front end if the wheel isn't perfectly
straight when it comes back down to earth.

Funksoul - whatever turns you on dawg. Seems
like you got a thing for miniskirts and
cloaks, lucky for you Halloween is right
around the corner :D

Chris, what happened... I take a couple days off, and come back to fnd you've been elevated to godhood!!
Think about it like this - when your bike is sitting up on the ground, level, a force of an ounce can cause the whole bike to fall over. When you're in stoppie mode, the whole mass of the bike is balanced around the COG, so that minor deflections cause the frame to rotate around the COG.

Hey Leon, Don't worry the natives are going
to knock me back down to Lamo Moderator
status with the quickness :D

What you said makes a lot of sense... I'm
trying to figure out why out of 1000 stoppies
that this one time something off set the
resonance. I must have inadvertainly (SP)
caused some sorta of bad steering input or
errr something... Hummmmmmmmmmm

Chris,
(pulling this from thin air) Could the abuse this bike has taken over time (stoppies/wheelies) be catching up to it? I say abuse, because although the R1 was designed to stand up to any kind of riding abuse, I can't imagine the designers planning for it to do as many stoppies/wheelies as you have let this bike see. Nothing wrong with that but my Nissan truck was not designed for the cornering hell I put it thru either.

Didn't the R1 have a problem with exploding wheels? Could the force of the bike returning from wheelies/stoppies be compounding this problem?

Just a huntch

That's a good question bro - I haven't really
been on it since that day and to be honest
I guess I have to keep trying (practicing).
If the problems reoccurs at an ever
increasing frequency than you could be on
to something. R1 for sale $8500.

Yes I'm serious!!

Ok chris, i kinda figured that the bike would wobble if the fronts not quite straight on recontact with the road. But i have never had it land without making a little twitch. Is it me or will there allways be a little jiggle?

Could pavement irregalarities of some kind cause the vibration? I don't do rolling stoppies (barely do 2 foot sloppy stoppies)so just a suggestion.
I just did a road trip and the pavement was grooved to be repaved. The bike tracked and hummed for 10 miles, and at 90MPH it is a spooky feeling, that came to mind.

I won't try to do a rolling stoppie/endo
unless the road surface is perfect b/c if
you hit a small bump - that's enough to break
the front end loose and well from there
it's palm surfing time.

I don't believe it was the road that caused
this I think it was some kind of crazy
steering input, though obviously I'm not
sure. I guess the best I can do is just
pay attention to the next time it happens and
see if I can find some kind of common
demoninator.

Those road groves suck! They ruin the ride.

I had an R6 last year and it's safe to say,
really with any bike, that when landing a
wheelie you are going to get some kind of
twitchiness in the front. I've landed some
3rd gear wheelies from about 130 - 140 mph
that were really bad. A cross wind will
cos the bike to tilt left or right when you've
got the front end up and when you come down
cockeyed you get alot more than a twitch.
I've landed the front wheel and had it slide
for 20 feet before the wheel could start
spinning again to catch up with the speed of
the bike... It's nothing to worry about
really just relax and ride it out it's normal.
