all i know about the 929 is that everyone tells me my gsxr is faster. i never rode one, but it looks like a cool bike.
the gsxr is comfy, handles great (if you don't make a ton of mid-corner corrections or drag the front brakes through a corner). the bike feels high in the back (for a street bike). the suspension is good at first but a tad soft after break-in (either that or you just start loading it up more).
it's got a hell-strong top-end, but pretty weak below 7000 or so. it's not an r1 in the effortless wheelie world. it'll do 'em easy, just not r1 easy.
many new gsxr owners are whining about the tranny and the cam chain tensioner. i think most are full of it. the tranny is great, way better than any other bike i've ridden. the linkage is set a bit high stock and don't think people are shifting them positively.
the r1 (imo) is the best street bike going. gobs of torque, fun, light, fast, incredible. r1's are awesome. end of story. i wouldn't worry about it being a time-bomb. i don't know anyone personally who any r1 part exploded.
downside to r1's--i think they fall in to corners and i have to correct everytime i dive in (gsxr doesn't do that, but my r1 friends think the gsxr steers a little too quick and fine it a tad unpredictable). the suspension is just like the suzi's fine during break-in, softens up. way too many expensive stuff out there for them (dussalt tail, over rearsets, etc, etc). very uncomfortable. if you're not fat and your girl's not fat, don't get it if you want her to go along. i rode my girl on the back of the rider seat because it was more comfortable for her.
it's the lack of girlfriend riding and the falling in in corners that made me go for the suzi. plus i wanted a suzuki or ducati since i never owned either.
you can also look at the zx9r. looks like a great bike. don't know much about it.
