Hey guys,

Today I wandered into my local Honda shop and was immediately aware of a strange unearthly presence right at the back of the showroom.
It was a stunning looking red 2000 748 with about 9500 miles on it. I looked it over and it seemed 'clean' - the rear tire was worn in the middle with about .75 inch of chicken strip. The bike seemed pretty much spotless.
I guess everything on it was stock except the exhaust which appeared to have four pipes out the back!?! What might that be?

The shop had a price of $8500 on it.

If this bike is truly clean - is that a decent price? The salesman said it'd been in twice. The last guy had it for only a month or so and then traded it in for an ATV or something..

I guess a big question would be is the warranty still active and are the rockers okay - also have to factor in the cost of the impending 12K service. What'd that be on average? $500 ??

Just curious about this bike, it's my birthday next week and last year my wife bought me a 900SS as a surprise. Hint!

Any feedback would be welcome.

748

I bought my 2000 748 new (8 tenths of a mile on it)in March of this year for $11,295.00 I think it's a good price. I wouldn't even think of selling mine for that and it has 7,800 miles on it. I would ask if the bike had all of its service papers....like if the valves were checked and/or adjusted at around 6,000 miles and if the oil has been changed on a regular basis.

I'm gonna take a stab at the exhaust and say it's a custom job. They probably came off a MV and were welded on to the 748. Did they look like the MV exhaust? I haven't heard of anyone making a 4 outlet exhaust yet except for the one that comes stock on the MV.

Although it's a good deal in my opinion, it's hard to buy a Ducati from a Honda shop because I bet they don't even know where to begin to check it over to see if it's a worthy machine or if it's worthless. Ducati's carry a 2 year warranty so you should be able to get Ducati to draw up a warranty contract and list it in your name once you show proof of purchase. But if the bike was bought new before December of 99 then the warranty has ran out. I would check all these things before making a decision it.

One thing about it...it's definitely hard to buy a used Ducati, especially when it's a 748, 916 or 996 because you don't know what it's been through and what Joe Shmoe had it first.

That's not a bad price, but you could probably find one with that many miles for a little less. As long as there is DOCUMENTED service papers, it should be fine. The rockers are not a problem, so don't worry about that. After 9500 miles, I would suspect that any warranty item that may have gone wrong already would have.

Hey, I know a guy who has a '99 748. Decent bike with a couple of carbon fiber bits here and there. It's very well maintained, and he'd probably let it go at a pretty fair price!
