Todays Lesson

OK, I got my FZR last summer. The guy who sold it to me told me "I had it jetted for the micron(a full race system), stage 2, I think". Well shortly after PAYING for the bike my brother informs me that it looks like my bike is running "a tad lean" and asks me if I would like him to look at it. Well me being the dipshit I am I say not now, we'll look at it this winter, well we didn't.

Tonight we decide to take a look at the carbs cuz my bike's (still) off the road for maintenance.
I remove the airbox and spend a half-hour trying to take off the carbs (my first time). After I admit that I know nothing about carb work my brother laughs at me calls me a moron and has them off in 2 minutes.

Another 2 minutes later I hear, and I quote "well that’s not a good sign".
One of the rubber diaphragms that pull up the slide and open up the main jet(?) had a 1/4 hole in the seal, effectively REMOVING THE USE OF THE MAIN JET. ok so 4 minutes in the carb's and we find that one cylinder was doing very little, cool I had a triple and a half.
Well out of pure morbid curiosity we decide to take a close look at every jet/main. And yep, bone stock *sigh*,so now we have a very (and I do mean VERY) lean running triple and a half (maybe less I'm not sure). But that’s not where it ends for this poor tortured man. More of an amusing side note than a problem, the man I bought the bike from did indeed have someone look at the carbs, that’s why the diaphragm was ripped, he pinched half of it when he screwed it on. AND the "jetting" the man talked about, well the mixture screws were played with, but with no real sense of purpose, two were turned 2 and 1/2 out (that’s where they are suppose to be) one was 3 and 1/2 and one was almost 5! turns out.

The good: When things are fixed my bike will be much better than when I started working on it (AKA faster :D)

The bad: umm.. Yeah, you know, the whole carb thing prity much sucked.

The ugly: Me, trying to take off my carbs

Wish me luck.

Hey Fizz, "learn by doing", right?

Not only will you have a much better-running bike, but you learned a thing or two about working on carbs!

Gotta be happy about that, right???

:D :D :D

Not only did I learn by doing but my brother still had some videos that the dealership he works for made him watch, he MADE me sit down and watch 2 of them about how the carbs work.

no, I'm not kidding.

Fizz,

i think that you might be able to assist me here. since i wont be getting my R1 till next year (hopefully injected and with ram air) :D :D i am looking for a beater on the track in the meantime.

i rode a '92 FZR 600 last night for a long time and i have to say i was remarkably surprised that the bike was so nippy. it was pretty much all stock except for a rear sprocket change and a windshield.

the bike has 15,000 miles on it and most of it was highway since it was ridden from colorado to virginia. new tires, brakes, fork seals have been added to it over the past couple of years. plastic looks to be all original and in pretty decent shape.

the guy is asking $2900 for it. do you think this bike is worth this. also, is there something about the FZR to be vary about?
i just need anything on two wheels right away :) and wanted to ask you since you got the same bike. this one is red/blk/white though.

thanks man!! :)

fizz,
http://www.colter.org/6Days/fzrcarbs.htm

arif,

$2900 seems a little high, but they are great bikes. voltage reg is about the only problem they have. be leery, there cheap if you know where to go ($35 or so, but been quoted $120 something).

In the dc, on ebay, there's a 400/600 85% complete with leathers (if i remember correctly)--- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=392765109&r=0&t=0

there's no bidder yet, you may be able to steal it. he's been selling for awhile.

arif, i have a bunch of 400 info, most of which is relevant, let me know.

Tony,

yup that is what i thought too..2900 is a little pricey not to mention that i will have to convert it for the track.

the 400/600 conversion that you referred me too looks pretty decent. i am in the process of contacting the seller. so you think that the conversion can be done without any major hiccups, huh?

thanks for the lead, bro. :) i will keep you updated on what happens...

arif, there are a lot of 400/600's out there. the swap is fairly easy from what i've read and been told, not like the 560 ccs motors.

check out
http://www.webspan.net/~psalonis/400faq.htm for details on how to do it. ignore the 560 spacer plate info, it's out dated.

also if you wanna get one (especially for track use), i'd suggest joining the 400 mailing list, at www.roadracers.com

the list has a lot of very serious 400 racers and builders. and the egroups database even has pictures of jason clay's yzf600 crank and head 560.

oops, forgot about this link

Tony,
I was wondering what you used on the 400 Dyno jet or Factory?
I just got off the phone with the people at Micron and they didn't have a jet kit for the FZR, nor could they tell me any settings to try out first. Any jetting settings for the FZR in you're seemingly never-ending bag of useful and relative fizzer links?

i have a dyno jet (we think) in the fizzer. like factory better. i don't really know a lot jetting. i know the stock air box helps the 400, but i think pods are okay on the 600.

i hate doing carb work for all the reasons you mentioned.

GAHHHH!

OK, went to the bike shop to pick up the boot/slider that was bad. Not so simple (and why would it be) 100$. I have to buy the whole damn assembly. "Well", says the parts guy, "I can look for an aftermarket one for a whole lot less" great I think, who would have guessed that someone had the bright idea to make a aftermarket "rubber thingy". No go, they don’t have any for the FZR, R1 yes, R6 yeppers, Yzf 600, 750, 1000 sure, but not the FZR. AGAIN proving my theory that the FZR is the red headed stepchild of the Yamaha corporation and all it's subsidiaries.
Any ideas of where I can get the part I need for a price I can pay??
Any other ideas where I can get a jet kit cheap??

PS. My next course of action will involve a highpowered gun and a bell tower.

I think that means we both "have some issues" :)

More on the carb fiasco,
Well my brother thinks he can mess with the jets enough to make it "ridable but still lean" with out blowing a hole in my piston. He has all the jets he need but with out the needles. As for the boot he can make it seal for now but I still need a new one (I guess it was less of a hole and more of a "gap"?).
It may be a dumb risk, but man I've been off my bike for almost 2 months now :(
So I might be back on the road by next weekend.
