The Yamaha R1 "Oil Light Fault" ... and crash bung/ loose motor warning !!

All a bit scary this post .... but could be of use to those paranoid out there ...

P.S also bloody good to use on people at track days, as I innocently found out after mentioning the following to "The Babyfaced Assasin" .... the look of panic was lovely !!

Anyway ..

1. Crash bungs. On many bikes, including my R1 these use the motor mounting points by replacing the original bolts which hold the motor to the frame, and making this a stressed member (oww ... I love that phrase). Anyway, mine were loose, hence the very disturbing creak/ cracking noise I would get once the bike got hot, expecially when going on and off the throttle and side stand ...(not at the same time .. or course arf arf)

2. The "Faulty Oil Light". After 25,000 k's mine started coming on and of at irregular intervals. Usually once the temp got to about 73 degrees... and a right pain and distraction it was. After much expert advice, and from those that are in the know, I was assured this was a common fault and to not worry .... provided my oil level was ok. Well, I didn't check me oil level, not properly. I gave it a quick look, yup, oil in the window... and as the R's NEVER need attension I figured I had the 'faulty light' problem ... so I used some black tape instead which worked a treat on the track .. no light !! ....no distractions.

Still, on the 380k's plus trip back from Sepang the light got more consistent ... and I remembered the advice about checking the oil level. It was only a little low i.e about half way in the window. So I put in about 400 ml .. which took the level just past the dot on the window, and just a little below the top of the window ... when the oil was warm and left to settle for a few mins .... anyway ... prob solved .... my oil light was not faulty .... turns out I'm the faulty one !! .... arf arf ...

Can you imagaine if I had stuffed the thing .. and had to take it in for a major sorting .. only to be asked ... "why did you not put some oil in bro .. yer light mustta been on for ages ??"

Good post.... I assume that "crash bungs" are what we call "frame sliders" everywhere else in the world :D

I always wondered about the replacement bolts you get with those frame slider kits. See in 2000, Yamaha upgraded the bolt material making in stronger b/c the motor mount bolts were flexing on the original models. I have my doubts that any "bung hole" :D manufacturers are using the same high quality grade steel, thus adding unwanted flex to the chassis. Unfortunately, the original bolts are too short to use so you are stuck with the bolts that come with the kit. Oh well, just a thought.
