Im new to the ducati thread, its always been a looker bike for me, Umm, all i do is look at it, :D i love these bikes, and as ive read, 6000 mile valve service keeps coming up? is maintenance really that extensive? they need to be check that often? and for what reason? they go bad? get loose easy? need replacement? how much does that usually cost to get that service doen?

im this( ) close to buying a ducati, i'd like to know what im getting into..

sorry if this post is repetitive.. couldnt find the other one..

Ducati has a unique design that closes and opens the valves with the cams instead of using springs to close like other bikes. See:

When I had my 900ss I did all the maintenance on it myself. Just get yourself a good manual (I had a Haynes) and it will simplify stuff enough that you can do it if you have decent mechanical ability. The valve adjustments aren't too bad, and there are some shortcuts that you can take here and there to save time/money. The dealer near where I lived at the time had a trade in policy on the shims, so it cost you next to nothing to replace them if you had to. I doubt anyone else does this. Then again the actual cost of the shims shouldn't be too bad, though I never did see what the actual price was.

Timing belts are important. If one breaks, you can lunch your engine fast. For the monsters and ss's they are only like $50/pair. And as I recall, the interval is like 10,000 miles, so that is cheap insurance.
