There doesn't seem to be many street 250s for sale...the only one that comes to my find is the kawasaki 250 ninja. Oh yea, and the aprilia...which is too expensive.

I'm tempted to buy a 600, since my friends have 600s and I ride the freeway once a week, 100 mile trip. Oh yea, what's the top speed of the ex250...would it be suitable for a 100 mile freeway trip?

Though I've never ridden a 250, I would think they're lots of fun...but I think I appreciate speed as much as I do maneuvarability...so I'm not sure what bike I should go for. Would the ex500 be a good inbetween?

Please, feel free with opinions and advice, thanks.

oh, and it would be my first bike.

With all those hwy miles I'd get the 500 or 600. The ex250 is great and does fine on the highway if you're not too big but if your're over 5'5" or 150lbs go bigger for the hp.

Unless you just want a real cheap bike, the 250 will get up to ~100mph but you're gonna have to row through the gears a lot on that little bike.

The 250 is def. a fun cheap bike.

Ninja 250 about 105 Aprillia about 140, maybe more.About the same HP as a SV 650 but quite a bit lighter. About 70 HP.
Ninja 250 has about 25 HP is heavier than the aprillia and lighter than the SV.
I recomend the SV or the aprillia

I have to agree with what everyone has said so far. Being an owner of a nija 250 I can attest to their performance. They are a total blast to ride around town and occasional highway. Their handling is just about unmatched and have pretty good power for their size, but you really have to work for it, (1st through 5th by 45 MPH, normal driving). That's an acceptable trade off for a daily rider just for their fun per mile factor as well as MPG (50-65). However its those long weekly trips that I think you are going to want something with a lot longer legs that won't be working so hard to maintain highway speeds (10,000 RPM @ 85-90 MPH). Though I have never ridden the aprillia, I can't imagine a whole lot of difference. My Personal recomendation would be the SV650. Just give yourself some saddle time before you twist the speed thing to the limit.
Hope this helps.

Not trying to pick on anybody and not saying the aprillia is a great street bike but it is like comparing a prop driven passenger plane to a fighter jet.
The Aprillia has triple the horsepower and weighs less than the 250 Ninja by at least 50 pounds.
It will accelerate about the same as an FZR 600.
It will out handle a 250 Ninja.
It will out stop either.

Suzuki GS500 is slow, the 250 Ninja will give it a run for the money.

I'd recommed the SV, the Ninja 500 or a used 600.

It may have 40 advertised hp or 40 factory claimed hp or even 40 hp at the piston rings. Having dyno tested many bikes I can assure you they have little more than 1/2 of that

Some claims from factory Kawasaki manuals
95 zx-6r 105PS @ 12500 My 00 tested @ 94 HP
88-90 ZX-10 135PS @ 10000 as much as a stock R-1?
86-87 250r 40PS @ 12500 8 more than my heavier 400 supersport but not any faster, how does this work?
90-93 ZX-11 147 PS @ 10500 As much as a stock GSXR 1000 has tested. Recomend you don't think these bike are as powerfull as you seem to think they are.

Your right, I don't know what I was thinking the 250R is 29 HP at the rear wheel. I must have been thinking Crank HP. Where the hell is my brain. Oh wait there it is.

The ninja 250 is way better than the nighthawk

I have the VTR 250. It dynos at 25 earth shattering horse power at the rear wheel:eek:
Its a great commuter, but frankly, on the highway it sux.
I could probably do 100mph with a tail wind.
Its a great bike for doing a run through the local twisties, except in uphill sections. You've really got to tap dance with the gear box to get the most out of it.
Running costs are fantastic, I get about 18000ks from a tyre, insurance is dirt cheap, and the 13 litre tank takes me about 340ks.(even when I rev the shit out of it)
I'm guessing it does 0-60 in about 7-8 seconds, so the traffic lights drag strip is a bit of a let down..
Personally, I'd get the SV650s. They are one of the best bikes ever made for the money..
