Ok, a freind of mine is looking into getting a "Older ninja type bike" as he put it. Personally I would not trust him with a potato gun much less a bike. I like the guy and all, but personally, I don't think that it is a wise investment. He has changed the oil in his car once in 3 YEARS since owning it (because he has not time, as he put it). How do I talk him out of it?

I sent him to the MSF website. He said that it looked like fun. The only bike he has is a BMX. Never ridden a bike before. I started on a 94 Yamaha 225 Dual Sport. I will hopefully talk to him tonight about it. thakns for the advice!

Maybe I could attach a lawn mower engine to his BMX HMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Excellent question, Jester. There are an awful lot of motorcycle riders out there who have no business being on a motorcycle.

Your best bet would probably be to TRY and convince him to take an MSF course before he even thinks about buying his own bike. At least that way, he'll get a taste of the sport without having to make much of an investment in it.

If he's a complete fish out of water when he's on a bike, he'll find out in the class. But if he's willing to listen to the instructors, he'll at least have the information he needs to make the right decision. Hopefully.

Has your friend ever ridden dirt bikes? That's another method to introduce him to the basics...

Good luck!

tell him if you don't change the oil every 800 miles they tend to exploid the clutch hub and throw their owner down on the ground and kill them. ask a squid question.... :)

seriously, good q, just be upfront with him.

Well, it sounds promising. At least he didn't reject the idea of an MSF class out of hand... "I don't need no stinkin' rider class -- gimme the keys to your Ninja!"

Just keep guiding him, and maybe tell him about this forum. There's an awful lot of good advice here (except when it comes to wheelies... .).

But it sounds like you're on the right track with him...

First lesson: THEY ARE NOT NINJA TYPE BIKES. :(

Mine is fast and looks good, unlike the Ninjas.

The MSF course is the way to go. If he is interested then maybe he does have some sense about him. If he can ride a BMX then he should be able to handle most Ninjas. :D :p

Just kidding on the Ninja comments except that I don't like it when sportbikes are called Ninja Type Bikes. ;) That will usually draw an instant lesson from me in motorcycle manners. :)
