I'm thinkin' about gettin another bike - not that I'm not content with my Kawi - I just want something else as an all-arounder. In short, I'm going to keep my 7R for fun in the twisties, etc., but I also want something for commuting and some heavier sport-touring (preferably something torquey). Oh, and I want something with more than 750cc (maybe a 900 or 1000 or more).

Any suggestions?

And no, I will not be insulted if you recommend a Honda. ;) :D

Speed Triple, VFR, BMW...Get something with some character! Try a vintage bike...cheap and easy to work on as long as it isn't British or Italian! I'm looking for a mint condition '69 CB750...now that would be kick ass! Variety is the spice of life as long as it isn't a Milwaukee twin! AAARRGGH! My boat already has an anchor!

Out of those id have to say the 929. It has tons of power, and is pretty damn comfy as well. I am 6'3 240 and it fits me great. I would never own a kawi or suzuki :p j/k so those are out and the yami is an awsome bike (minus the shifting problems) but wouldnt be the best bike for long trips. I would see go for the 929 and if your a kawi fan go for the zx9. The zx9 makes for a good bike on long trips as well. But like i said i wouldnt own a kawi ;)

Get a VTR1000. They are obviously slow, underpowered, heavy bikes suitable only for commuting and/or touring.
Nothing like your 7R, of course.

Let's start with the Big Four.
Here are my first choices:

Kawi 12R
" ZX-11
" 9R

Honda 929
" RC51
" XX

Suzuki 'Busa (Nah....too ugly)
" Gixxer 1000 (2001 model)

Yamaha R1

I'm trying to figure which ones would be more suitable for longer rides, while still being able to take the twisties once and a while. Comfort is key. No.....power is key. Then comfort. :D

I don't really have anything against this bike in particular, I just prefer full fairing. The VTR and TLS are not on my list.

Oh, and to add to what's above:

Aprilia RSV Mille

Considering your choices, now that you have found the courtesy to post them so as not to waste more people's time, the original question is quite misleading. Not many of the bikes you list are what most people would consider "secondary" bikes.

With that bit of slamming out of the way, I'd say that the XX, ZX12, 929, and ZX9R should make the first cut for power and comfort.

Spitfire, no one has suggested a Trimuph sprit ST955. Full fairing, great character, good sport tourer, some say the best. If you can part with the fairing and want to save some bucks the Kaw ZRX1100 is a great bike as is the old GPZ1100 circa mid-90's.

Spitfire,
you said that you are looking for something for the purposes of commuting while you plan on ripping through the twisties on your ZX7!!

if you are considering the R1 and the RC51 then i think that you will have to relegate the ZX7 for commuting coz those two bikes are great for the twisties and suck for commuting.

another thing to consider is your size. how tall are you and what do you weigh? the RC and the R1 are great for smaller riders i.e. 5'9" or os and below 150lbs. larger people usually dont prefer these bikes so that is something you might want to consider.

if you are interested in a RC51 let me know asap coz i know of THREE around the DC/VA area that are up for sale. all in pristine condition with less than 500 miles on ALL of them. for some reason, all 3 owners are having a tough time selling these bikes. so let me know. :)

The bikes I listed have the displacement I'm looking for. I have yet to narrow them down to what I want.

Oh, and if the term "secondary" is misleading to some of you (Pete), let's just consider it "another" bike.

trust me if you are looking for a bike with touring range the RC51 is not for you. Your ZX7R would seem like a touring bike in comparison. If you want something with torque drop the poser attitude and get a superhawk. Torque, power, looks and comfort.

I'd stay away from the VTR for sport touring duties - my lawnmower has a greater tank range.

Bandit 1200 is pretty cool lookin'. Anybody know how it performs (mainly engine performance, but handling, also) and how comfortable it is?

I have two points that have already been mentioned. The RC-51 is no touring bike. The ZX-7 is closer to a touring bike than the RC-51. Another, please don't take it the wrong way, but the RC-51 would eat the ZX-7 alive in the twisties and in the more open stuff. I mean in your hands also, not mine. Once you got used to it you would be much faster I'm pretty sure. It sounds like what you need is the ZX-9R. It has tons of power and can hold its own in even the tightest of twisties. :)

Damn this is funny. I'm telling Spitfire not to get the Honda because the Kawi is more suitable for what he needs. :D :D :D
