I've heard that you shouldn't buy a bike if your feet can't touch the ground. Does this count for dual-sport bikes also, because I know that they are usually pretty tall.

Thanks.

No offense, but how are you going to put your feet down at stop lights or in traffic if your feet can't touch the ground? Unless you're really good at balancing, you've got to at least be able to get the balls of your feet on the ground. You can lower streetbikes, don't know if you can do it to dirtbikes/dual sports.
Maybe look at the smaller 250, 350 sizes, they're closer to the ground than the 650's. Still plenty of power for around town and trails, and good to learn on. I had a KLR 650 that was pretty tall, and I'm 6'.

That's all I needed to know. By being able to reach the ground, I meant flat-footed. I was trying to ask if it is OK to be on the balls of your feet.

Just watch out for that oil spot on the road. I normally stop with only my left foot down and my right on the peg/brake, it just feels more comfortable to me.

As long as 1 foot touches the ground you will be okay. When riding 2-up, you might have a little bit of a problem holding yourself up on 1 foot. Nowadays, most motocrossers can not stand flat footed with both feet. The new bikes are super tall.

Rug Burn, tell the truth, you are only 5' tall and you always stay in the right lane so that you can use the curb to help hold your bike up. :p

I like to wear those pogo shoes that came out back in the 70's, with springs in the bottom so you can jump higher. You oughta see the sparks fly when I drag my feet :D
