Satellite Internet connection.

Does anyone out there have any thoughts or experiences with a satellite internet provider? Since cable and DSL aren't avaible in my area, and I'm getting really sick of dial up speeds, I wanted to know more about a satellite connection. From what I've read on them so far it's not too appealing (high cost for both hardware and usage, you still need a dial up connection, faster than dial up but still only 400 k/s). Is it worth the extra costs for the slightly faster downloads? Is possible to awalys be connected?

Thanks

Sprint has a microwave based version. I'm pretty sure it doesn't use a phone connection at all. But, you have to be line of sight to a tower. I think there is information about it on the Sprint website.
Yeah I hear for downloads it's nice and fast (unless it's really overcast or raining hard, then good luck for a signal) but uploads are slow because you use the phone lines.

Yeah, unfortunately that's not available in Canada, or atleast in my area. So it's not an option either.
Hmmm, Sounds like your only option is getting a T1 line run to your house. A little (ok, LOT) more expensive, but insanely fast
Hyside, Go to www.directpc.com, and check out the information. I would do it myself, as I'm in the same situation you are. It's 70 bux a monthe for 400 down and 128 up. That's 24x7 access, so it's cheaper and faster than ISDN, but the downside is the cost of equipment. That comes out to about 700 bux. That's not including a small router, if you want to conect 2 pcs and have a real firewall to protect you from the outside. It IS a 2way device, so you do NOT need a phoneline, which is good. If you can justify the cost of the equipment as well as the 70 a month, I say go for it!!I almost did, but the 700 in equipment turned me off.Installation was free with the package, for me. Hope this helps!! Jimmy G
I have heard of the Satelite internet service. It is supposed to have a real nice download but crappy upload speeds.

You could always get two lines and two internet accounts. By doing this you can get close to ISDN speeds by running both at the same time. You will need a server that can handle the double dial up connection though.

Sprint only offers the service here and somewhere in the midwest US. If you look at their site they are stating that they are not accepting any new accounts.

Just in case you wanted to know.
Satellite internet is reliable most of the time. Heavy rain can interfere with a Satellite communication devices signal, so satellite internet sometimes goes out during storms.
