I have to wear one to work due to military regs. but I was wondering if anyone else uses one...?

Yes, I do feel like a construction worker sometimes, and get weird looks from almost everybody I pass (I have even more HD riders not wave at me but scoff in disgust :rolleyes: ) Hell, I've even had people yell obscenities at me from their windows--not kidding! So, instead of feeling cool on my bike, sometimes I feel like I'm taking the short bus to work ;)

But, on the other hand, I've never had a single instance of a driver not seeing me or pulling out in front of me--so that's a plus. I feel like it does make me safer and more visible. But then again, I ride with brights like I'm sure most of you do so maybe it's the headlights that get peoples' attention, or possibly a combination.

Curious what you all think.

Been wearing them for years. They started a couple years after I joined the Marine Corps in 1983. I still work for the Corps even though I retired. So... I still get to wear a vest. I wear the Icon verson now, not the construction worker looking junk. You can see them here .

I didn't know about the icon vest until I bought a flourescent orange construction vest with reflective tape. It is much brighter than the icon vests but looks gay, of course.

Do you feel like people notice you in the icon vest (does it stand out)?

I see a lot of people on base with vests, and noticed that, in most cases, the vest isn't really that noticable from the front. This is esp. with people on sportbikes who have a very leaned-over riding position, or on HDs and such that have large front windscreens. The lights on these bikes are more noticable than the vests. I've got a fairly small windscreen with an upright seat so the vest seems a little more visible than on some other bikes I've seen.

When I was in the Navy I only use to wear it to the base and back. To me they really are a bit silly, I get the point and all, just personally they are a bit much.

I am sure it helps visibility a bit. But the real problem isnt people not seeing us, its not respecting us or not being able to judge our speed and distance. People wil pull out in front of a motorcycle much quicker then they ever would a car let alone a 2.5 ton SUV.

Personally, I don't agree with wearing the vests. The modern safety equipment is more noticable than the little bit of reflective material on those vests. I always taught my riders that visibility is is their own responsibility. The vest does not hurt, but I certainly think compared to the other equipment out there, it isn't that great of a help.

The headlights on my R1 makje that thing pretty noticable, if not downright annoying.

Dan Q - What other modern safety equipment are you referring to?

Are the lights on your R1 stock, and are you talking about the brightness of the high-beams?

I looked into upgrading my bulbs to a higher wattage, but it turns out that it came with the highest watt stuff on the market in that size so I think modern bikes do have more safety conscious things on them now. Have you tried the mechanism that makes your headlights pulse? That might be effective.

My helmet is bright and has many reflective surfaces; my mesh jacket has reflective piping throughout that exceeds the reflectiveness of a vest in size, location, and area; the motorcycle has better lighting and reflector placement than ever before.

Yes, they are the stockers. Those projector beams are pretty bright, and attention gaining. I only use the high beams when in dark situations, or when I am running alot of corners at speed at night, since the projectors cut a pretty fine line.

I had the icon vest for a while. Then I ditched it for a pt belt. I first got into riding when I was stationed at Ft. Stewart. Bought the icon vest after gettin pulled over by an MP. Then ditched it when I fount out I could just put those yellow pt belts on. Put it on when I hit the gate, took it off when I left. Problem solved. Screw the construction worker thing.. thats for road guards... not motorcycles.
