As I start to shovel shekels aside for a new bike in '01, one consideration is the maintenance cost. I stopped in at a local Yami dealer to ask about the new Fazer. They told me that since it uses a modified R1 engine, which has a service interval (after break-in) of 26,000 miles, that the Fazer's SI would be in the same neighborhood.

Is that right for the R1? I checked Yamaha's page, no info. I checked MCN (Brit), couldn't find it.

sounds right. in 1994 or so yamaha made most if not all 5 valve yamaha's 26,000 miles for valve checks, but don't know 100% on the r1 or fazer specifically.

I do believe that is correct - I just checked the manual a few weeks ago. I will double check tonight but I am 90% sure that is the correct interval. Pretty cool eh?

This is right from the R1 manual:
For odometer readings or time periods higher than 19,600mi or 31 months, repeat the same maintenance as listed in the chart from the 4,400 or 7 month interval

From the 2000 R1 manual page 6-3. Check and adjust valve clearance when engine is cold every 26,000 miles. spark plugs are listed as every 8,000 miles and after initial break in oil should be replaced every 4,000 miles and oil filter every 8,000 miles. Yeah right, my oil gets changed every 3,000 miles with a new oil filter.
Hope this helps.
