i posted this in the drag racing section also

hey guys i just got a '98 gsxr750, it's had some mods done for speed, air shifter, bigger sprocket, that kind of thing, i was cleaning the front wheel this morning and i noticed it only has one front rotor and caliper. the front fender is also missing, i know the bike was down because of scratches on the right side, do you guys think the rotor/caliper got damaged also and the guy was too cheap or is this a common mod for lightening the bike? sorry if it sounds like a dumb question, it seems a little dangerous to cut the brake system in half to lose a few pounds. thanks for any response.

Some people remove one of the front rotors/calipers to show off the front wheel....its a bling thing. Not sure in your case, cause its usually when there are chrome wheels +/or spinners on the bike.

yeah, thanks for the replys guys, the wheels are polished, my 97 gsxr has chrome wheels, so the '98 being polished doesn't look quite as good. the 98 is my wife's ride.

yeah, it was a recent purchase, my 97 is the black/red paint scheme. hers is predominantly blue, so it's looks more feminine than mine. also mine hasn't gone down and she is still a bit of a novice rider. we got frame sliders the other day for both.

Yeah usually a 'showoff' thing however keep in mind (and make sure you're wife fully understands) that removing a caliper/rotor dramatically decreases the stopping power of the bike. If your serious about riding why would you want to take away a motorcycle advantage. Anyway if your wife is a novice rider I would definately put the brake back on. Stopping is just as important as going fast. It allows you to ride another day.
