well since my accident i haven't ridden at all...when i was running the bike in the driveway the other day, the bug overtook me and i hopped on, leg in the cast and all, and went up the driveway and back (about 600ft). every few days i'll back it out of the garage and start it and let it run but that's pretty much it.

should i be doing any other maintenance while not riding? should i consider investing in one of those stands? what is the point of having a stand anyway? are you saving suspension wear?

i could ask a question about winterizing but i plan on riding when it isn't rainy. any special things i need to do since i won't be riding constantly during winter?

well letting it run for few min isn't nessicaly the best for it either as it doesn't charge the battery. Best thing to do is put some stablizer in her fill her up. Disco the battery and put it on a tender if u have one if not and u only plan to be down for a few weeks u shouldn't have a problem.

The stand(s) are necessary for most maintenance and are helpful for cleaning.

Sounds like a good time to adjust & lubricate all controls, moving parts, and bearings.

put some stabilizer in her? what do ya mean by that? disco the battery? does that mean i should discharge?

yeah, i was thinking about taking this time to pull up the chair and run through the lubrication of the bike. i really want a stand. should i just fabricate something? they can't be that intricate...

Gas stabilizer, like Stabil. It keeps the gas from going stale and gumming up your fuel system.

Disconnect the battery so small drains like the clock don't drain the battery down. You need to keep the battery fully charged. A battery tender is the best for that since it's a low-amp charger.

Unless you have a lot of welding experience, I don't recommend fabricating your own stand. If you don't build it correctly you'll end up dumping your bike in the floor and causing more damage than the cost of the stand. I know your bike is damaged right now but in general principle it's better to spend the $120 on a stand.

Not only do the stands make it easy to clean, as well as repair, and maintain your bike, they also when both are used get both wheels off the ground so they don't develop flat spots because they sat on that one spot for months.

You will find lubing the chain a whole lot easier once you get a rear stand. IF you get a front stand, I suggest one that lifts from the triple tree. Vortex makes a good one and if you want the pitbull name they make another as well.

IMHO, flat spots on tires are an old wives' tale that no longer applies to today's technology. I have yet to see any pictorial evidence of this occurring in the past decade or so :2cents:

ok sounds good. i will look into the stabil fluild since there might be periods of time that i don't ride for a few weeks. i'm assuming that this liquid is safe to burn through a new tank of gas...ah i'll just research it.

i would spend the $120 on a stand but have been living on a farm and welding with my dad since i was about 10. that's a good 12 years of welding. i'm borrowing a stand from a friend and as soon as i'm out of this cast, i'll start the project. i'll be sure to take some pictures also.

i also thought flat spots were out of date due to new technology in tire production. i've heard that motorcycle tires that sit in one position with the weight on one particular side for too long tend to become unbalanced. maybe this is the issue i should avoid?
