Yes Mike you are right!

Honda raced this bike in Endurance andin WSB knowing that the FIM would issue a new ruling if they were succesful.
Finally FIM introduced a new ruling saying : cylinders must have a round shape!

But Honda had to prove that they finally made the Oval piston bike work, and it was a real wonder!
Just look at the specs:

748.76cm3
155PS/15,250rpm
7.76kgm/12,500rpm
155kg Dry

To give a reference, the 1987 NSR500 specs are the following:
499.27cm3
156PS / 12,000rpm
9.55kgm/12,000rpm
122.9kg (Dry)

Notice that the HP numbers are almost the same, but of course the NSR is more than 30kg lighter!!
The fact is that there was no other 4 stroke machine that could compete with the NR750 in Superbikes or Endurance, not even the legendary RC30 of Honda.

Back in the late 1980's during our summer ( euro winter ) we had a group of races known as the Swann Series ( sponsored by Swann motorcycle insurers ).

Our own Malcolm Campbell raced the NR750 against local superbikes, including Pete Goddard on the YZF750, and euros like Rob McElnae on the YZR500. The mixed up formula produced some great racing.

See on the fairing the French, Japanese and Aussie flags ?

:)
