This is kind of long but I labeled the paragraphs to help weed through the extraneous crap.

THE BEGINNING--READ IT SINCE YOU'RE LOOKING AT IT ;)

My wife and I just missed a crash at Deal's Gap by about 20-30seconds. Rider is fine but his nice ZX 9R is not so fine.

THIS PARAGRAPH JUST SETS THE STAGE IT CAN BE SKIPPED. ;)

It was a group of young guys(early to mid twenties I guess) riding very new sportbikes. It was two 929s, an RC 51, new GSXR 750 and the ZX 9R trailing. We were in a Jeep Wrangler following a minivan and old couple in some four door full size car. We pulled over and let the 929s, RC and Gixxer buy then pulled out and in few seconds the ZX 9R came up behind. We pulled over a few curves later and let him buy.

THE INCIDENT--SHOULD READ THIS. :)

Shortly after that we came around a turn and the guy on the nine was stopped in the road I saw the marks and told wife to pull over quick. He said he was okay.

EXPLAINATION--SHOULD READ. :)

He went into one lefthand turn to hot and ran wide at the entrance to the righthand turn. Went off the pavement and basically him and the bike shaved the side of the "mountain". Luckily it was mostly red clay there. His Kawi Cordura jacket and helmet save him from some serious injuries. The helmet took a pretty good beating.

THE LESSONS--DEFINITELY READ

The lessons for street riders:
I believe he was trying to catch up to his friends who were apparently more experienced and on bikes more capable(given equal riders) in the tight stuff.

#1 ride at a pace you are comfortable with.

#2 your bike is more capable than you are so if you're in too hot then just lean it more to tighten up your radius. This was a case, IMO, that he could have made the turn. I think he got startled and didn't trust the bike. These guys were pushing but not that hard. They were definitely not in squid mode, other than one of the 929 guys was riding in a short-sleeve shirt.

Disclaimer: I am making assumptions as to what the guy was thinking but they are based on what I saw and what he said afterward. :)
