Hey all I'm 15 and a half and about 6'1'' and weighing in at about 120-130 pounds (i'm preety damn skinny). I am planning on taking the msf course, but I can't decide to get either the 250 or 500 kawasaki ninja. Is a 500 too much for me to handle? I have a little tiny bit of experience riding 125 dirtbikes that use a clutch but not that much. I'm very cautious against riding fast because I gota concussion riding my bike not too long ago (I would have died if I hadn't of had a helmet on). I want to get a motorcycle that will last but wont be so fast that if I slip up I would be hitting 80mph! Is this what a 500 is? Or is it too fast for me to learn on and should I just get a 250? Keep in mind I'm a total noobie at street bikes.

haha. Are you serious about that being blown off the bike? I'm also gonna have gear on so that will add a decent amount of weight. More opinions are welcome!

Very unlikely that you'll be blown off the bike =P I think he was just kidding. Personally, ide say go with the 500, because of your height. They really are pretty much the same. just the 500 can go a little faster =)

Now I'm confused

I posted over at a kawasaki 500ex forum and a member suggested I get the 250 because its a good bike to learn on PLUS its cheaper to get PLUS its resale value is higher. Is this all true?
Should I just get the 250 to learn on and then go straight to 600? Or the 500cc to learn on and then straight to 600? Which is easier?

Get the 500 BUT...... keep it AT LEAST a couple of years and REALLY learn how to ride it before getting anything else.

Too many spend a few months on a learner, get used to the controls, and think they've got this stuff down. The learning curve is WAY longer. Don't find out the hard way as so many do. Personally, I'd wear out the 500 before moving on.

I would do the 500. I knew a girl that was probably about the same weight as you and she said the 250 tends to get blown around on the interstate.

I started on a ZZR 250. Sure, it got blown around a bit, but I got used to it quite quickly.

My fiance now rides it and she feels uneasy in windy conditions. Maybe it's just a chick thing?

One of the things you need to learn is to not tighten up in the wind. Lean the bike as necessary and give it a little room to work on its own, a little tweak as needed. Two tightened up arms have a way of canceling out each other's input. It gets harder and harder the more you tighten and the desired correction is never made. Add to that, the bike not going where you thought you aimed it and you've got the makings of a VERY uncomfortable situation. Relax, tweak a little, and all will be fine.

This is all part of the learning curve that takes time. Keep that learner bike for a good while after you think you've got it down.
