The question was something like:

Name 3 British Motorcycle manufacturers which used Villiers engines.

WOW! I didn't even know that. MY question was "Name three british two-stroke dirt bikes made in the early 60's " I was going to throw in AJS to make it easier, but Aris didn't even need help.

You win, Aris!!

P.S. Robert, not a bad idea, but someone else would pop up to take his place.:D

When I saw the question I was sure you meant they were using Villiers engines, it's a crazy coincidense if you thought of these brands by chance!

This kind of Trivia is very nice, I hadn't thought of it before ;)

Maybe I have to restrain myself from answering sometimes :eek:

What does it stand for?

When I started riding in about 1966 I stumbled upon some old(then) motorcycle magazines that discussed these brands. I also remember an ad for some brand of bike being pitched by Chuck Connors(aka The Rifleman) Apparently he was a competent motorcycle racer back then.

Now that I know these brands used someone elses motors, I bet they were built in some barn by a few guys using their own funds to build the bikes. When the Japanese bikes hit the market, they just evaporated.

No, please don't restrain yourself. Your knowledge brings back fond memories for me and is a good history lesson for the "youngsters" like Robert et. al.

So,again what does DOT mean?

DOT means 'Devoid Of Trouble' :)

Desmo you started riding in 1966 and started racing this year! You are really something :cool:

I was born in 1967 and started riding in 1982, but my momentum was slightly reduced in 1985 when I got a 30cm blade and 12 screws to support my right leg, very stupid crash and it was my fault :( It was even more stupid that I started riding the bike and even rode from Athens to Paris through Italy while still using crutches to walk :eek::
I 'm younger than you, but I really like motorcycle history and old bikes.
The Greeves, Cotton and DOT were respectable brands, but relatively small scale manufacturers who preferred to concetrate on the cycle parts and use a proven motor like the Villiers.
The Villiers engines were very popular at the time (something like the Minarelli engines were in Italy later) and they werte used for both off- road and roadsters as well as racing.
They were used also by Panther, James, Francis Barnett and others that I don't remember now.

Deviod Of Trouble hahahahaha. Those Brits, what a sense of humor. I Love the ol' USA with all my heart and soul, but it must be nice living in an environment where one of the great national pastimes is motor sports.....and nude beaches :D

P.S. I did race AMA Dist. 37 Desert from 1975 to 1985 off and on. Any idiot can go fast on a course you have memorised. Try it on 120 mi. of unfamiliar desert terrain..in August.:twofinger

I suppose you mean the Baja. Well that's a different story, I admire the guys that go desert racing, but It's not for me :)

I ve only entered Classic Rallies, and managed to get a 2nd place, but it's not a matter of speed, accuracy is the trick in these.

I ride for pleasure in Baja. I raced in the Mojave desert in California.

2nd place is'nt bad, Aris!

Here is one for you. What innovative suspension design did Greeves use?

Hi Desmo,
I missed that one, just saw you added a question.

Greeves used a 'Leading Link' front suspension :)
At the time it was considered very functional, it had some advantages of the Earles fork (same basic principle) , while at the same time it was good for off road bikes.

Right! I had a Sachs 125 that had that and it was really good (for the time) over rough terrain. You win!
