So of all things Dawn and I spent a good part of the night in the ER when we found she got a piece of metal lodged in her eye. We went back today and had to have a second surgery to remove the remaining fragments. She's recovering now and it looks like they did a good job.

Just an FYI when you think of riding without a visor or good goggles.

Been there... It's ruff...
I got a piece of steel in my eye and thought it was dirt.. Thought I rubbed it out and flushed clean.. 8 hours later my eye kept twitching and watering.. Went to the ER and they had to stick a very large needle in my eye to numb it, then grind out the fragment, while I was awake...
The worst part is when you wake up a day later.. I had to hold a hot wash clth on my eye for an hour to loosen the goo..
Then there is the liquid steroid that burns like acid....
Man, I feel for her

Wow. I hope she is alright. I am the guy that always rides with my visor up, and have no alternative eye protection. Keep us posted as to her progress....

Best of luck to her. Glad to hear that it was caught in time and no infection formed. I had a neighbor that lost a portion of her vision because she attributed a grain of sand in her eye when it was actually steel. It got infected and she had to wear an eye patch for months before she could even get partial vision back.

Good luck to the both of ya

Your eyes will heal faster than almost any other part of your body! Not that I encourage anyone to damage them. It's good that you have a handle on the situation. Most people wait a day or two before they realize something is really wrong which increases the chance of infection, etc. Good luck! I had a similar situation when a homemade bomb that some neighbor hood wacko made when I was younger went off near my face. I had gunpowder and shards of plastic in my left eye, not to mention a burned face and minus most my hair. I had not imediate sight loss however over the years my vision in my left eye has progressively got worse.

Keep your eye protection on!

Arrrrrrr, me too! ;)

As a child, I had to wear a patch for two years, due to having one "lazy" eye. You can imagine the sh*t I copped.

(I'm a massive advocate of using my visor at all times.)

Glad to hear she's doing good.
I'll follow your advice and make sure I'm wearing wrap around sunglasses when I have my visor up.
