Ok so here's the story...

I signed up for a MSF class and had to take one an hour away from home. My initial budget is roughly 3500....

driving to and from class 5 times (my Ranger XLT gets like 15mpg)

$65

MSF course (all the cheap college ones are full)

$330

A year of insurance on a 2002 500cc bike (just estimating year and size) state farm

$850

That leaves me with like 2300 tops... I'll try to make some more money but I will also need to get a helmet and stuff....

optimistically my budget for a bike will only be $2500

I really want to get something like a Ninja 500 ... something that I can start with and wont get bored on.

So I go and talk to a bike dealer and he says that they dont and probably no one will have a used ninja cause they just get passed down and not traded in a lot.

Where should I go? Am I totally screwed or what?

you're not screwed, but a dealer isnt going to help you. They just dont keep bikes around in that sort of price range. Seeing anything under 5k is rare.
Hit the classifieds. There should be quiet a few nice bikes in there, then get a buddy and start looking at them. Take your time. Something will come up. You never know, you might even get a helmet with the bike. I ussually recomment not to use those (at least for long) but a helmet is better than no helmet.

$2500 bike!

Man, don't get discouraged, i just passed on a bike for my girlfriend, it was a 2000 ZX6R with 12,000 miles, needed tires and had 1 dent in tank and a little rash, could have bought it for $2000 without haggling over price. My point is you can find many bikesin your price range, maybe not perfect, but great fixxer uppers, you could have spent another $300 on tires and rode this bike daily with no probs.

I did not pay attention where you were from, but try this guy, i have found alot of great deals, and that is the price range he usually deals in.

www.actiontoysok.com

call him cause he does not usually post the cheaper biks, GL

I just checked his site, he has a 2001 buell blast 500, that would be a pretty good first bike, cheap insurance, good resale value, and lookes about like a GS500, but you are a long way away from him, but still look at his stuff for reference.

Dealers have waiting lists of people looking for cheap bikes, so they sell them as quick as they get them. Search cycletrader.com, craigslist.com, and pick up a Want Ad magazine, you should be able to find something. Don't just rely on dealers.

I know it's hard, but be patient! Something will come up.

Unfortunately if you are running on a shoestring of a budget for a good m/c at a super low price. Then I think you should up your pocket book. Also remember around September & on are better buys, but some Spring & though Summer said prices on good used bikes are at their peak let alone what are being offered.

$850.00 for a 2002 500cc bike with State Farm sounds high...

I pay about $6.00 a month for liability only on my 2001 Yamaha YZF600R. Full coverage was around $350.00 a year I think.

And that's with a speeding ticket still on my record from 2003!

I'm only 18 to start so that might have a lot to do with it .... The actual cost depending on the bike I get mayb be lower.
