I'm damn glad I don't live in Britain or Wales. They're voting on a ban of spankings, effectively. Here's the free, no-login-necessary article. Any bets on how long before they try to enact something like this here?

I think we should vote to ban stern talking to children as well. Lord knows the damage it can do to the mind of those poor children. They should be allowed to do whatever they wish, afterall they are children.

They already did.

But I hear they are offering a special "kids" rate for Sirius, starting in 15 months.

I agree with their intent. There are people out there that hit their children to a criminal level, where it does cause damage, however permanent it may be.
Where a plan like this would fail miserably, would be enforcement. These would be crimes that categorically happen in the privacy of a home, without objective witnesses. The victim of which rarely able to accurately asses situations, and make objective judgements as to the circumstances. Also, I'll bet the police will be deluged with complaints, mostly from kids who were not criminally beaten, just pissed that they got punished. CPS has already done this in our country. Kids have often called CPS with unsubstantiated complaints, just to try and get out of trouble.

With a law like that, police would be overwhelmed. It would eventually be recinded.

The phrase that bugs me the most is "reddening of the skin". I don't care how you cut it, a spanking is going to result in a red buttock, in all likelihood. So, the law, as you've already pointed out, is effectively impossible to enforce reasonably to match the intent.

Sure, conceptually its a great idea, but legislators aren't there to legislate fantasy, IMHO.

I wholly disagree with legislation like this. Children NEED to be spanked. The buttocks are ideal for this! Big and fleshy, you don't receive real damage from a spanking. Now growing up, I received spankings, and I received beatings. Two completely different things. I can see protecting children from wholesale beatings, but spanking is useful tool which has been severely undermined by institutions like Child Protective Services.

My ex had a small child, and she was basically afraid to spank him. But, she would get so frustrated from not being able to control the bugger that she would end up slapping him, which IMO is much worse. I would rather redden a butt-cheek, than a face-cheek. Needless to say, I told her to spank him instead. It does less damage to the child; it gets their attention, lets them know they were wrong, and incentivizes improved behavior (be good or get more spankings).

Bah. Children.

So then ban spankings, big deal. Looks like I'm just gonna have to start using the closed fist a little more often.
