I sold my last bike probably a year ago and I am getting ready to buy a new bike.

I learned to ride at 7 and road dirtbikes until I was 16 then started to ride street bikes. I am 32 now.

My last few bikes where older sport bikes, 89 750 ninja, early 90 gsx-r 1100 and I owned a Vmax for about 8 years, good old point and shoot.

This bike is strictly just for fun, after work and weekend rides etc...

I was all set on getting a GSX-R1000, maybe even a 750 or an R1 but I am thinking about maybe getting a Vtwin sport/standard. Maybe a SV1000S. I know the bikes are completely different. After riding that Vmax for so long I wanted something with some handling, lighter bike etc..... but I have never riden any of the newer liter bikes so I don't know how the power band will compare to the Vmax. I know the Vmax is completely dated so I am not sure what to expect. I am thinking I can go with the Vtwin, keep the nice power band, not as much power but still fun and much better handling then the Vmax and still be happy.

What are the new Vtwin liter bikes like compared to the I4s and how do the bikes compare to an old Vmax?

Any one want to throw in there 2 cents.

Also, the dealers said taking a test ride on any of the used bikes for sale is no problem at all so I will probably do that but a lot of times the selection is very limited.

I think for the pure fun factor, the SV1000 might be the best bike for ya...although the 1k gixxer is very nice...A friend bought the SV a couple months ago and he loves the bike, he had a gixxer 600, and 750 before getting the SV1000...And although the SV isn't a sportbike, per se...with a couple of mods it can be made to handle very well...has good tourqe, and pulling power...If it were me, it would be between the SV and 1k gixxer, be nice to have both...:thumb:

Having both would be great :)

I don't race or do track riding, just spirited riding in the mountains, riding around town etc.. nothing crazy.

At first I was dead set on a gixxer 750,1000 or an R1 but I am not so sure how these bikes will be for my type of riding. What are the power bands like in these bikes. Are they very peaky? Do they make good street bikes or do they feel sluggish around town unless you got the rpms up?

Anyone know the power and torque output for the gixxers, R1 and SV1000S? I am interested in how much HP I am giving up if I go with the Vtwin.

After looking at that I don't think I would be happy with anything other then a liter bike for my type of riding. Now if I was racing or into track days etc.. I would go for a 600-750.

After riding a 600+ lb bike for 8 years it is going to be pure heaven to hop on something lighter.

With the mention of the Sv-1000 I wonder(?) if that bike is on the '04 list of bikes? One might check up on what Suzy is offering in '04 for I have hunch that bike did not sell well since it come on the market in '03.

I went to some SV sites and it appears that the 1000 is having clutch problems as well as oil leak problems.

I should just go get the R1 and get it over with.

Found a dealer with a new gixxer 1000, $9986 out the door.

You should be able to get a 03 1k gix for about 9500.00 otd..


Bummer bout the news on the SV...:(

The 9986 includes all taxes, licenses etc.... everything.

Is the 9500 price the same?

I guess I could counter offer and see what happens.

I don't know if $$ are much of an issue to you, but if they are, you may want to check insurance rates on the GSXR vs. the SV - may be a big enough difference to sway you.
