Hello all,

This is my first post on the forum. A little background on me: I'm 29, I've been riding off and on since I was 15, attended a mc safety/riding course when I was 16.

I rode a 750 Virago for a couple years, an old 1000cc HD Sportster for a few years, and been on an old/heavy Kawa KZ1000, and a couple other bikes.

I've never been on a real sport bike, but I'm thinking about getting one. I love the feeling of hard acceleration.

I have a friend with a Yamaha R6 out in cali (too far for a test ride) who has been trying to talk me into an R6 or a GSXR 750.

I've also been looking a little bit at the VMAX. I was really impressed with the quality and reliability of the Virago I had.

I would only have about $4000 to spend so I'm going to have to get something used.

Is there a comparison anywhere on the relative characteristics of the different sport bikes in terms of riding position, power band, how (un)forgiving the suspension/handling is, etc.?

Also, are there any sport bikes that give you the best of both worlds in terms of power band?

i.e. solid power on the bottom for riding in traffic, commuting, etc. but still have a ton of power on the high end for when you've got a stretch of open road, or you just really want to haul some ass?

You are sort of looking at the impossible when thinking of a 600cc with a maze of torque yet maze of power at higher revs though some 1000cc bikes have better low RPM torque & usually more power then a 600cc bike. Pretty simple due to 1000cc Vs 600cc.

I would say it is simply a toss of the coin & what attracts you & fits well.

Are the high revving 600/750cc bikes a pain to drive in traffic?

Also, do dealers generally let you test drive bikes, or do they expect you to put money down on a bike you've never ridden?

Most sportbikes are a bit of a pain in traffic due to the peaky engines & the extreme lean forwared riding position with small stubs of the clip-on handlebars.

Probably you cannot test most m/cs unless you are a very prospective rider of that shop & know them.

Sure many bikes like Cruisers are allowed to be test riden especially the demo Cruisers.

The pains in traffic have more to do with the riding position and engine heat than peaky powerbands. 600's require constant shifts, but thats part of what makes them fun. My advice is to simply stay in lower gears. For example, in town, where speed limits rarely exceed 40mph, I never get out of first.

All liter bikes have a very unforgiving nature. As for powerband linearity, honda's are the most smooth, suzi and kawi are pretty linear with suzi having a quicker throttle responce (abit more unforgiving), and yamaha's have a dip in the band around 7k, followed by a surge immideatly afterwords.

Take a look at the TLR, TL, RC51, SV, etc.

The big 1000cc V-Twin sport bikes seem to be what you may be looking for, they are a little more comfortable than "R" bikes, with gobs of torque, and still run in the 140, 150's easy.
