I saw Spitfire's dirtbike question in this forum, so I figured I should post this here.

I wanna get a sportbike when I'm older, but for now I'm going with a used dual-sport bike.

I'm trying to decide between the Kawi KLR250, Suzuki DR250, and Yamaha XT225 Serow. Because of my price limitations, all of these models are from the early 90's era.

I've heard from other people that either of these three bikes would be fine, but I want to know if there's anything I should know about any of these bikes that would affect my decision in some way.

Any suggestions/comments/whatever that are off-topic are welcomed. I want to make the right choice for a first bike.

If it helps at all, I'm just under 5'8" and about 170lbs.

Thanks.

I remember the DR350 being rated very high, but have heard nothing on the 250. Either of the other 250's should do fine. I'd go with the one you can find the best example of in your price range. And I agree with your choice of a d.p. bike to start on- dropping it will cause little or no damage, tall seat hight gives you great visibility over cars. When you're ready for a sportbike, keep the d.p. for trail riding and commuting!

I have a '92 DR350-S, and it's a great dual purpose bike. However, if you decide to buy one, buy the '93 and later electric-start version! My kick-start bike is a pain in the ass. I've gotten pretty good at starting it, but none of my friends can ever get it started! It's a very specific "dance", and you have to do all the "steps" in the right order...

Also, at 5'8", it'll probably seem kind of tall, as most dirt bikes will, but you'd probably get used to it...

But overall, the DR will go just about anywhere. I put some real off-road tires on it, but you can still ride it on pavement, and it will keep up just fine with city traffic.

O.K., I've changed my question from "How many bikes do you have, Scott?" to "How many bikes DON'T you have?!" The latter would probably result in a shorter list. :D
