The agony of a snapping chain at 240! I'm sad to report the unthinkable happened to my Babes. I broke the chain at 240 and it caused major havoc. It holed the block and cracked it beyond repair. It took out the clutch, severely dented the chain side Termi, etc. Fortunately I did not came off and was able to free it to a stop. Will tow it in tomorrow for a cost estimate. Just needed to share my broken heart with some-one out there that can understand my devastation. Hopefully we can mend her back to her former glory!

Damn that sucks or as they say in South Africa, "Damn that sucks!" ;)

Good luck with the estimate and keep us posted. Glad you were able to control the bike without crashing. :eek:

I BET YOU SAID "OH SHIT" WHEN IT WENT...

dOOd are ya able to tell why it went?? when i get to a very high speed, the one thought that comes to mind is my rivit job i did on my chain........

Is it just my Palm Pilot or does that work out to be about 150MPH?!!! :eek:

Are you going to be able to fix your shorts? I know if that happened to me that the brown stain in mine would be unremovable! :hurl:

Babes is running again. The damage? Well I still want to make some changes but the chain incident was a whopping R74k (approx $US 6,750) or half of its purchase price!

I've tried the chain supplier route but got no where. The chain had only 1800km done and its a top class "gold" link chain, properly installed by a agent and I've just had a service done by said agent 127km prior to the incident. The dealer confirmed with the chain supplier that they actually did check the chain and lubed it during the service!

Oh well, I'd probably would've had a case in the USA but this is Africa!

Yeah but in the US you would have to talk to a lawyer. :mad: ;)

Hell, find the chain manufacturer representative and capture him and tie him to a tree in the desert, strip him, then find a thursty baby elephant. After a couple of minutes he will be throwing money at you. Of course you may have to purchase said elephant too. :D:p

Damn that sucks! Same thing happened to me last year aboard my now departed '00 900SS. The chain just broke while cruising the freeway (70mph) enroute to a ride with friends. The clip master link failed and it shredded my carbon fender and cracked the engine case. I heard a really bad crunching noise, the engine revved and I cruised to a stop while frantically waving my arm as I cut accross three lanes of traffic.

The chain was a DID X-ring gold chain, installed by the Ducati dealer with a new sprocket only a month before. The dealer trucked my bike to the service area (on a Monday when they were closed!!!), gave me a loaner bike for a few weeks (new Falco) and repaired the bike and replaced the carbon fender without costing me a cent!

The damage to the engine case required they take the engine out, split the cases, weld the damage, machine the weld to spec, put it back together and put the engine back in the bike. It took a few weeks, but the bike was good as new.

It helped that I bought the chain at the dealer and had them install it, and I found the chain the next day on the side of the freeway. It also helped that the manager (who is now gone unfortunately) is a stand-up guy who redifined 'customer service.'
