I am a new rider for sport bikes. Ive ridden dirt bikes off and on for several years. Im looking for a good bike to start out with. My brother in law is recomending basically any sprtbike 600cc and under that is not R or RR rated. He says i should look for the ninja ex500, SV650, and F3's. I like the Yamaha YZF 600 but I cant seem to find one for a good price. Do these all sound like good first time sportbikes? Also Ive found a few good deals on F4's as well. Is there a big difference amoung the different F4's like the F4I and what not? With whatever bike I choose money is a factor. Im 19, a college student and poor lol. I know size also matters (rider size that is) Im a small rider. 5'9" 125lbs (57 Kilos for you metric mates) My biggest throwback with the 500cc bikes is the top speed, which I have seen posted at around 100mph. This seems slow to me since my 1.4L Protoge can top that. But then again its on a bike not a car. I know there are MANY posts asking about first time bikes so I appreciate you takin time to reply to this one.

The Ninja 250 tops out at 100-105...the EX500 is 120-130. So it's a little faster than you thought.

Well you mention you're poor...a Ninja 500 can be found relatively cheap, it's reliable and fun to ride. Plus resale is very easy.

Insurance will also be lower, in general. Most insurers look at engine displacement for basing their cost for sportbikes.

Your brother in law in right on the money. In addition you may want to consider nakeds, such as the SV650, Honda 599, Z750.

Heh, yea i know im small. I eat like a horse too lol. I wont break though, my bones are rubber : P. Thanks for the advice all, I wanted to make sure my brother in law wasn't givin me a line since he is influenced greatly by my sis who is 100% against me gettin a bike. I've noticed that most nakeds resale dirt cheap and the price seems to hold pretty stable until around 20k mi. I was lookin at a F3 the other day, It had been dropped (not to hard just body damage but it was all fixed/replaced and had a new paint job) they were askin 3.5k for it. It had 17k on it. Was that a good price or was I good for passin on it?
