Has anyone ridden both, what are the
differences REALLY? I am waiting for my
neighbor to let me ride his 98 but he is
still waiting on the front brake pad recall
crap before he'll take it out (wuss...).

How much different is the bike... Be honest.

Thanks,
Chris

P.S. First sunny day in just shy of a week,
I am going to go bullistic when I get out of
here...

Thanks man, actually funny that you replied
at this particular time; I had my first
98 R1 ride last night. I really couldn't
tell any differences though but that was
b/c he had like 20 psi in the front tire so
I was too busy trying to keep the bike
straight. And it was hard to feel what was up
because the front end had a nice shake to it.

But yeah I would really like to know if
there are any REAL differences that someone
can tell of...

Thanks

I was wondering this myself. There was a lot of talk about the 98 & 99 having a useless 1st gear. There was a change there, I'd thought that would be easy to tell (a difference)?

Yeah, I know what the changes are I was
just curious what they actually felt like.
There is modification to the front forks
to stop some of the dive in corner entry but
I was wondering if anyone actually noticed
this? Oh well, I haven't had enough time on
the 98 or 99 R1 to tell myself. Though yes
I did notice the shorter 1st gear. Didn't
thing it was a huge difference though. I
still think it's useless unless you are
trying to yank stumps out of the ground..

I have ridden the 99 and own a 2000. Biggest difference I can tell is the shape of the tank and the feel of the reach to the bars when you tuck. Also feels like the 2000 turns in sharper. Both my 00 and my friends 99 have almost identical suspension set ups but the little difference may be what causes this.

No he's not rich or spoiled. His now Ex-father in law is the general manager of a dealer here. He still has to pay he just get's a good discount. He had 2 97 YZF1000's he totaled the first and wrecked the 2nd but it wasn't a total. Actually the R1's are the first bike I've known him not to total or even wreck. He just rides the hell out of them and does some mods and then when winter comes he sells them. They get rideen hard, but not abused if you know what I mean. He takes care of them along the way.

I have only compared the R-1 through the mags.A 150 changes were impressive but still not enough they said. You can't please everyone. I just had my R-1 in to sync the carbs, and the tech took it for a ride and said it was quicker than last years. I had no doubt. It is an awesome piece of machinery. Frankly I think we are all crazy anyways, bacause the bikes are far better than we will ever be.It was the only bike I tried that fit me. All the other bikes felt like they were meant for smaller riders. My second choice would have been a Honda CBR 1100XX, except it was a little too heavy for my liking. It is easy to up the power on the R-1. You can get 20 to 30 H.P. with minor engine mods and exhaust. A turbo kit gets over 60 H.P. and goes over 200mph.Way to quick to die.L8R Hal
