Hi to everyone!

I have started looking at bikes again after being out of the game since '92. Sold my last bike (750 duke) then after 21 years of biking.

Now the kids are old enough to look after themselves it's time to shop around.

A black R6 has caught my eye. I appreciate it has hard suspension and is a tad narrow focus (built for the track).

What I'd like to hear is open and honest opinions about it on the street. Bike mag tests are BS, I'll go for a test ride when I've organised the funds for the whole deal. Need helmet, gloves jacket etc too. $$$$$$

Definitely a great bike, although the newer 600s do lack the bottom end. R6 starts to make power from 10K-11k, compared to the previous ones, which were from 7k-8k. All that means, it's a great bike for track, but for street, it might be a little chore to keep the rpms up or few gears down. Handling wise, 600s are few of the best.

Thanks for the reply.

I was hoping to use it as a Sunday ride: definitely not planning to use it to commute.

I looked at the new GSXR 600 Suzuki yesterday. Appears to be a more user friendly bike but I'm not really keen on the style. Have you ridden one of those?

No, I don't have experience riding it, to take a ride at the dealership here, I have to first close the deal. And I have quite happy with my current ride.

But it's a general rule of thumb that most super sports don't make their power until very high up in power end, and as peak revs redlines pushed higher each year , so is the torque band.

If you look at the old dynos here:

You'll notice pretty much how the powerband has changed from older 600s to newer ones. New 600s are obviously faster, but the torque on the older 600s start earlier, with far more usable midrange on the street. They make for better street bike in my opinion, just like v-twins, triples, and standard de-tuned 4 cylinders like Bandit 1200, Z1000, and YZF600R, older ZX-6R sportbikes, etc.

06 R6 has to be one of the most peakiest 600, the 03-05 model had more usable midrange for the street.

But that's just riding preference, they're all great bikes with different characterisitics. And pretty much what you feel comfortable riding or what looks good to you.

Took an R6 for a squirt. First ride in 13 years!! Could not believe how that thing went. Bit disappointed with the power off the line, but once in up and moving it sounded and felt great. Loved the brakes and the handling.

Not sure I liked the fact you have to rev the box off it to enjoy it. May test ride a GSXR 750 next. They have a new one for demo at the local dealers. I wish there were more 750 sports around.

I'll keep looking for nirvana.

2006 R1

Fusion,
I then took an R1 for a squirt. Paid my deposit and pick it up next week!

I found the R1 easier to punt around than the R6. The R6 looks a tad better, especially the tail with the rear pegs removed and a fender eliminator. But they had the R1 on special for around the same price.

One more week and I'm back into it after such a long time.

Great to see another Aussie on here. There's only a few of us!

Thanks for the greetings.

Soon as I get the bike and have added the personal touch I'll post a few images.

Have to get a new helmet. It's a bugger trying to find one that looks good, is light and feels just right. Sooo damn expensive these days.

Same for leather jackets. My black leather one from 1979 doesn't look all that cool anymore. Wonder why?
