Hey guys, Anybody got an opinion on the 1994 CBR 900. I can buy one in nice shape with 17,000 miles for $4000. The dealer won't let me ride it first because of their insurance.

Whats your riding backround? Honda's are good bikes, and if it looks clean and has had all the proper maintance done to it in a timely manner, then 17k isn't a problem. But 900 is alot of bike to learn on, so if your new to riding pass it by. Read the ATTN post in the new riders section.

I've been riding bikes for 20 years but mainly dirt. Have a 05'450 wr now and the only street bike was a Yamaha RD 350 2-sttroke. Talk about torque. But it The guttless 600 honda Shadow that dragged the pegs on every corner.

I don't know if jumping to a 900 is a good idea, but I'm a relative newbie to the sportbike world as well, so I'll leave the judging of it to my peers. Anyways, NADA has the high retail for your bike at 3305 and KBB has it at 3955 for one in excellent shape, so it's not to far off. I would try to knock them down though.

If you've been riding for a while, I'd say a modern 600 would be good for you. That 900 isn't bad, but you could find 2000ish model 600's for the same price. And besides, I think you'd be much more happy with a newer bike anyhow. Older 'liter' bikes are more of a collection bike, and honda RR's seem to retain their value pretty good.

The thing is that modern 600's is just as potent as old liter bikes, so it wouldn't seem bad finding a newer 600. Can't go wrong with 20 yrs of dirt bike riding under your belt.

Oh btw, newer 600's should out turn that old 900 easily.

CBR 900RR

With the riding experience you cited, you should be fine on that 900. The CBR 900 was a real landmark bike when it came out for the 1993 model year. VERY light for it's time. At 457 lbs wet weight, it's still a pretty darn light bike even when compared to modern machinery. The CB 900 made about 110-115 rear wheel horsepower, which is just a bit more than the top-line 600 supersports put down today. However, that 900 will have much more torque and low-midrange power. The bike was very track-focused and is well known for it's quick handling. You would have no problem keeping up with newer 600's. (It's mostly a function of the rider's skill level anyway)

At $4000, they are asking a premium price for a 12-year old bike. I would expect it to be in totally mint condition, and I'd still try to talk 'em down a bit.

zxrider is correct about the introduction of the 900 for we looked upon it as a ROCKET in power & would wheelie in shifting due to the short wheel-base.

I was thinking of getting one in late 90s but it would also mean the changes so I could install a 17" wheel & that would cost a bit more then I wanted only come '98 the word was out the new ones would be 17" front & rear plus some other dramatic changes so I held back till winter of '99 & put money down on the first '00 929 to come into the shop at my preference of colours & my setting the bike up. Note I had a Yamaha YZF600r & '91 GSXR-750 plus the prior bikes including the screaming Yamaha 350s to my own cafe racers.

I think from dirt to a fast trotting road bike is a dramatic step for being an ex-dirt comp rider for some 42 yrs I was also noting the differences in procedures of road riding & reason I often preferred a smaller bike yet also had several Vincent HJD bike but road with great caution for instead of hopped up 500cc from 25 to 30 hp NOW I was riding all of 49hp & later even 54hp.

Not the power of the Suzy or Kwacker 500cc vertical twins are almost competitive to the Vincent HRD of the past & any 600cc sport bike is staggering in power compared to the Vincent let alone the 500cc bikes I rode then. It is worth while thinking about.

The bike is cool, but tires have advanced a lot in the last 12 years, and the 16" front would limit your ability to take advantage.

Also the price is much too high for a bike that old. You'd be much better off at that price with a newer bike....:2cents:

This would be my number one concern. The bike is phenominal, but that 16 in front is going to limit tire choices severely. Aside from that, the entire RR line is championship stock.
