ABS

No, the 2002 ZX-6R does not have ABS.

I am pretty sure even none of the current 600 supersports have anti-lock brakes. ABS is something usually found on sport-touring, touring, and some standard-style bikes.

Because many of us are experienced m/c riders & would not have ABS brakes on any m/c we ride even if it was a freebie.

Cages are entirely different to m/cs you are going to find out, plus handeling them is so different as well. Above all remember a cage is SELF BALANCED with four wheels while a m/c is only balanced by the rider himself due to two wheels only.

I am surprised a newbie will come up with such a question. True on some BMW m/cs you can obtain one of their costly bikes with ABS brakes for an additional price, but that is one of the reasons that many of us will not touch a BMW m/c.

Even m/cs with linked brakes are rejected by the majority of riders & especially those of sportbikes for 90% of our stopping power is from the front brakes & basically 20% or less if one only uses the rear brake pedal.

ABS is pretty rare on bikes. Some VFR models have it, and some of the sport touring bikes, but no sportbikes. On dry pavement, a skilled rider will get better stopping distances without ABS. The other issue with most abs systems, is that if you are braking in the corner, while leaned over, the front wheel will slide long before it actually locks, so most ABS systems will not benefit the rider any. BMW is supposed to be working on the system that takes cornering loads into account, but I have not seen it yet.

Also, abs systems are pretty heavy, and expensive. Comparing the VFR's with and witout the system, they add about $2000 to the price and around 25lbs to the weight.

All those explanations you gave were very good and informative!
Much better than dribble and filler (fluff).
But I read somewhere (I thought on this site through a link) that ABS was superior. What a load of crap. I'd agree with your comments

I wouldnt say either system is superior. ABS is better for year around conditions, especially for less skilled riders.
Another system that is fairly popular is the linked brake systems, where the front brake lever actuates 2 pistons on the front and one on the rear, and the rear brake lever actuates 1 piston on front and 1 on rear. Having never ridden one I dont know what its like, but it sounds like a pain in the ass. Again, not something you will find on a race replica.

my buddies 2005 r1 has ABS...it came in handy when i was ridding his bike a couple hours i finished MSF :eyebrows:

Well I am a very seasoned rider and I had a BMW with ABS...the brakes were not linked and the ABS worked great...to say you are a seasoned rider and ABS would do you no good is foolish...I loved the ABS on the BMW and wondered why more bikes don't use it...I will admit at first I thought I wouldn't like it, but ride a bike with non-linked ABS and see for yourself...oh the 02 ZX6R never had it...on a side note the 98-02 ZX6R's are some of the best all around rode bikes out there, however if you plan on tracking with that bike it will show its limitations very quickly depending how talented a rider you are...

+1. I've never read a review of any sportbike that includes ABS. They are designed specifically for the track and you simply have no use for ABS on the track. That on top of what Vash has already noted (weight, expense).

I was thinking of that from a car angle. I've driven about a half million miles in my life and I find ABS very useful. Maybe not the same thing, but its a point of data anyway.

There was an article a while back comparing several ABS and non ABS models (of the same bike) they used 4 riders from different backgrounds. A track junkie, an expirienced road racer, a long distance touring guy, and a newbie. On dry pavement, both the sport riders did much better with no abs. On dry pavement with one slick obstacle, the two still did better with no abs, by not touching the brakes untill after they passed the obstacle. However in the wet, no one could even come close to the ABS performance.
