considering a supertard.. =)

can somebody enlighten me about the experiences of prepping a dirtbike, two stroke and four stroke for street tires. rims, lights etc, for the canyon runner, and the occasional open track day..

and how it would compare to regular street bikes at the track..

oh and how much money you put into making a super motard, bike costs, and all the after market stuff.. thanks

I build my 426
I got the street legal kit from Electrex $400
http://www.electrexusa.com/dakar/default.html
I had to get a WR staor to run the lights $400
I also got the wheels from the $1000 Whitebro rims on talon hubs

The bike is a blast to ride and as much fun on the track as my R6, if you are on a short tight track
I went to my first race this weekend. Was learning how to back it into corners. It was going well until I highsided in the last practice and didn't have parts to fix my bike

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I'm leaning towards a XR650L, it already being street legal, that would presumabley lessen the conversion cost. I've seen a number of these on the web, but no real details.
So I'd need- wheels, rims, hubs, tires? larger front disc?
After replacing those, what absolutely needs to be done- do the front forks need to be cut down, or reworked? anything to the rear shock? sprockets and chain?

Or would it be good to go after just switching out the knobbies for some 17" rims and sticky rubber?

nominal_squid 07-29-2002 09:59 AM

It all depends on how quickly you want to spend money. The XR650L is a good 'motard if you're primarily focusing on street riding it. A set of 17" wheels/tires and you have a perfectly functional supermotard. You may want a new rear sprocket to compensate for the difference in wheel sizes, though.

Big brakes are good to have, but not immediately necessary. I have not lowered the suspension on my CR, and don't think I will bother...just some playing with springs and oil to firm things up a bit is all that's needed.

excellent- thanks for the info.
it would be a street ride only for me, I think.

what else would be needed if you plan on doing some track days? and why would you lower a SM? dont you want the travel?

Ducman 07-29-2002 01:49 PM

All I have done is the wheels. I was thinking of lowering the bike but I am already dragging pegs. I firmed up the suspension alittle

I wouldn't spend the money on the larger brakes yet. At a full size track I felt I needed more pwer but the stock brakes still worked well. At a small track, the stock worked great
