Welcome to SBW!
Perhaps you should look in http://www.kbb.com . You can get an estimated cost of what the bike shold cost instead of letting the dealer or a person try to tell you.
I don't know about your exam but knowledge should be with you when you are riding. I got my license through an MSF certified course. (TEAM Arizona MTC). That may be a good way to go, you learn and then take your exam right afer.

Motocycle Learner's Permit.... check.
I got everything, but I cannot find a bike. I have been looking all over and cannot find anything that is not brand new, or costs as much as something brand new.
A guy was trying to get me to buy a new 2001 F4i... then even suggested I go higher than a 600... thats when I reminded him I was a "new" rider.
Anyways just venting steam as I quest to find my bike.
BTW, is it just me, or is the knowledge part of the motocycle exam in Virginia REALLY easy?
