snakesht I wish I would have kept up on the development of computers over the last 10-12 years. I could be a millionaire by now. Or at least hold an intelligent conversation with you.

kanwisch The original Linux kernel (written by Linus Torvalds who still leads the effort) serves as the starting point from which others have created different "forks" (technical term) to create their own vision. That's what's so fantastic about Linux distributions (distros for short, the real term for "models", though "flavor" is also often used).

Getting started I used one distro that was written to be almost exclusively a firewall, and then when I was an active application developer I had preference for another distro because of the ease with which one could setup application development environments and test servers. Now I'm using an entirely different distro that's very self-sufficient.

I'm pretty sure that (Ubunta) is the particular one that my uncle prefers. I had a desktop flop on me last year and he took the hard drive and installed linux on it so I could set it as a slave in my current desktop, or use it as a primary in a new computer. I never realized there were so many different "models" of linux. I figured it was just a single build with different versions.

os/2 was overrated. DOS 6.0 was definitely the best, but inevitably failed due to lack of user friendliness. (I say if you can't use a computer, don't buy the damned thing.)

I've been eyeballing Linux XGL, though. That looks absolutely insane.

Video

Although they are using a touch screen monitor for the demo, that is still about the best demo video I've seen so far.

Unfortunately, XGL is not a stable release, yet.

snakesht Sounds like a lot of work.

kanwisch, everything (so far) works adequately. But I feel like it's a nanny or something with its redundant warnings and everything. I hope M$ comes out with a decent OS sometime soon.
