Welcome to the forum and congrats on your "new" bike. The Ninja 500's really are a lot of fun!
Speedometer error is common on virtually all motorcycles. For some reason, the manufacturers actually build this error into the speedometers. 5% error isn't uncommon. I guess they think it's some sort of safety feature. Personally, I think it's just plain stupid. And yes, it is annoying.
I wonder if the digital speedometers that are becoming so common now also read high. Has anyone tried to verify their digital speedometer accuracy?

EX500 Speedo issues
Hi there I just bought a 1992 Kawasaki EX500. It's my first sport bike and I love it so far. It's a blast, however the speedometer seems to be about 5 to 7 miles per hour faster than I am actually going. I put a gps on it to check it and had my dad drive his truck next to me on the interstate to check it...Are there any possible fixes to this problem? It's really annoying me and I'd like to know exactly how fast I am going...HELP!!!
