Go with the Katana
It has a bullet-proof engine from the earlier Suzy GSX-R bikes (right into the 90s if I recall correctly as my ex-91 was with an air-oil cooled & dan powerful). This is a sensible move & no harder to work on then a liquid cooled bike.

|SilentNEKO||ok so an air cooled bike is better for hot weather? thats good news to me, how hard is it to build up the motor in a katana, you say its an old gsxr motor, well they were fast in there day right? I know you guys don't agree with me getting a kat but I like it and I can't afford a fz-1 so I will have to make do, any suggestions lets hear em|

|Billy2stroke||air cooled bikes dont overheat in summer at traffic lights as easily as water cooled bikes do... if its hot where you come from and from what I've seen from Senfield episodes thats the case then take this into consideration.|

|SilentNEKO||well the bike I learned on was a dream machine, I had a very rich friend who let me borrow his ducati 996 with a small turbo and a gasworks nos kit on it, of course I never used the nos, or even went over 80mph, but man it was cool. anyway I want something of my own, most likely to keep for just 2 years then get something else, or maybe turn into a drag bike and buy a new street bike. but for now I just need to get to work and I want something that will be fun to play with, and comfy to cruise to daytona in october. but I'm guessing a katana would not be a good choice for a drag bike huh?|

Believe me, for a first bike, a KZ-1000 or KZ-1100 is one hell of a bike. I started on the KZ-1000 and it scared me to death the first time I rode it because it was so powerful. (Both are air cooled). Both of my bikes produce a good amount of torque which makes them very easy to ride around town. If you are into tinkering, there is a ton of HP that can be coaxed out of the old kawasaki KZ and Suzuki GS engines. My KZ-1000 is getting around 154HP right now and can run most things down in a straight line.
don't dismiss the air cooled bikes, they have plenty of balls!

|apexismaximus||An old cb/gs/kz 750 will be about like the 600's today 11's in the 1/4, the 1000's will be like the 750's are today. So no, you won't be giving up much and if this is a first bike and your primary transport you'll find plenty of bike in there.|

Air cooled is a lot easier to work on and less complex, and yes they will make less hp per displacement compared to modern water cooled. The old liter air cooled bikes will be plenty fast enough though.

air-cooled vs liquid-cooled
hey guys, well I'm still searching for a bike, I got about $900 now so I'll be looking for a deal soon within the next month, anyway after checking out a bunch of different bikes I've leaned that one of my top 2 choices is not possible, I was trying to decide between an ex500 and a katana. when I sat on the ex500 it was to small, and the suspension could not support my wieght, the shocks bottomed out , I know I'm fat. so now its on to either a ok katana, or something else that needs work, it will be my sole transportation methoed so what is the advantage/disadvantage to having an air-cooled bike, is it slow in a straight line? I know it won't corner as well as a true sport bike, but right now I'm not worried about track racing. what else should I look for, I found a cbr 1000 but it was destroyed. what do you guys think.
