Smile Buying my 2nd Bike?

Hey Guys,

I am 19-20 years old, 6'0, 160 lbs. I'll be straight out honest >> what I am looking for is a motorcycle for the the show (to go to the parties, pick up girls, commute from dorm to college, and maybe just practice some stunts on my own in an empty parking lot sometime; no track use).

My history: I've been riding bicycles all my life and doing wheelies on them and all sorts of stuff. Then after I turned 12, in the middle east, I rode 150cc and 250cc and also did wheelies and some fast riding, handling, etc (yes, also popped the clutch and fell..not too bad though).

Now, in the USA, I have yet to take my MSF safety course, license, etc and I am planning to do that near the time when I buy my bike.

I am really looking for old and used bikes but ones which look good (obv. for the reasons that I mentioned above) and which have a nice roar (like the zoom sound when you rev. it, not the lawnmower type sound that comes from a ninja 250). I looked at 89-94ish FZR 400 & 600 models but really don't know whole lot about motorcycles since there is so much variety in the USA.

Could you guys please suggest other models I should look at which look more like a sports bike and have a nice sound (again, I won't be riding it a lot, more for the show power, sound, and short distances). I am approaching a budget of $1300 but hoping to notch that up to maybe $1600-2000 if time permits.

Also, how much do you think insurance would cost for the bike that I mentioned or the one that you are suggesting. I've had a car for the past 3 yrs. under my parents insurance (which is gone now) and have had no accidents or speeding tickets.

Thanks to all who responded,

Ameer (Austin, TX)

Older cheap sportbikes.

I think what you are saying is that you are looking for a cheap 4-cylinder sportbike for $2,000 or less. That is a pretty tight budget, but in that price range, the bike you already mentioned- the Yamaha FZR 600 is probably your best bet. You could also consider a Suzuki Katana 600. If you're really lucky, you might be able to find an early (1991-1992) Honda CBR 600F2, for $2k.

Do you know how much insurance usually costs on these kinds of bikes for someone who's 19-20 yrs old with no accident or speeding history (in car) but buying his first legal motorcycle. CBR 600F2, FZR 600, Katana 600, etc

Your best bet is simply to call your existing agent and ask. Don't bother with collision, at that age it will cost more to have it than the bike would yield if it were totaled, IMO.

And welcome

Ameer, did you consider a 93-95 Kawasaki ZX7? I just picked up a nice 95 for $1500.
