general maintenance

I just bought a 97 ZX-6R with 5200 miles. Needless to say it's probably been sitting for awhile, but runs fine. I took it for a ride for about a half hour and things seem fine. I've owned dirt bikes before, but this is my first street bike. Can anyone help me with general maintenance? What type of oil to use? How often to change? Octane of gas? How to check and change tranny fluid, and how often? And what's the deal with air filters? I don't plan to race or anything, I just what something general. Please help!?!

It'd be a good idea for you to get the factory service manual for your bike. (I prefer factory manuals because they are specific to your bike, whereas the one size fits all books like Haynes and Clymer cover many bikes over many years, meaning that the pictures and procedures never jive with your particular bike).

All of the fluids and procedures and intervals, etc. will be nicely detailed in the book.

I for one don't know about the cd's. I got my service manual from a shop for, as you said, around 60 bucks.

Maybe someone else around here can testify as to the cd's.

Just pay the $60, it's worth it.
