Am I about to screw up?

For anyone who has read the post in the Suzuki forums, I'm looking at a 1999 'zuk TL1000S.

I expressed some concerns about having a too powerful bike for my first sportbike to go with the VTX.

I'm limited by my budget so I've been looking for a real steal rather than being able to pick and choose the 'perfect' bike to continue riding on.

Now I've found this bike with a little over 3000 miles, Yoshimura slip-ons, re-mapped (according to owner), a custom paint job, and a few other little odds and ends and I may be able to get it at a really good deal. When I say good deal, I mean around $2200 under retail value! All it really needs is a really good cleaning and a new rear tire.

What do you guys think? Sure death? Something I can get used to after the 65-70hp VTX? Bad bike overall? Great bike overall?

There's still a couple of potential mechanical problems to sort out before it's a done deal, and I still have to hope the owner makes good on what he initially offered it to me for instead of going to check the book value and taking back what he said.

Any help is appreciated.

im unsure about leaking only under load. I was told that a case with too much oil has the possibility of coming out the vents. I don't knwo where a TL routes the vent, but most likely through the airbox. I doubt it'll cost a lot to fix. If the motor sounds good and no smoke is coming out then if your lucky you might just need anew gasket or seal somewhere.

There are several threads in the 'new rider' forum regarding first bikes. I would recommend you read up. Basically people will tell you litre bikes and even new 600's are too much power if you are not a skilled rider. I would be worried about a custom paint job, because one thing, the bike could already have been wrecked and repaired. Wrecked vehicles can turn into lemons sometimes.

My advice is you shouldn't spend every last dime on a good looking bike with mechanical problems, and you can get a speeding ticket or pop a wheelie on any size bike out there.
