Changing Sprockets?

Just a quick newbie question. I hear a lot of talk about changing sprockets (teeth) on a bike. I've been trying to picture it in my head to no avail, does removing teeth on the front sprocket have a different effect than remeoving one from the rear-wheel sprocket? Does adding teeth increase mileage? acceleration? topspeed? All of the above? A quick description would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick

Changes the Ratio .....

If you like easy wheelies, go up 1 or 2 teeth on the front sprocket or on the back. You will lose top end. Not too noticeable unless you are doing over 150mph all the time. I changed mine, and I like it. Little more torquey.

Fewer teeth on the front or more on the back will increase torque and acceleration in a given gear. It will also increase revs at a given speed and may reduce mileage and top speed. More in the front or fewer in the rear will have the opposite effect See my post in this thread for the math.
