Post first bike 600?

Would anyone recomend a 600 for a first bike? I have the experience on birt bikes and four wheelers, my stand up jet ski is a 750. I'm 21 6,1 and 200 lbs. I'm contemplating a 97 yzf 600r vs a suzuki gsx r 600. The yamaha seems to have a more relaxed riding position. Does anyone have an opinion on this?

I started out on a Hona 600f4i in September, and I absolutely love it. For comfort I would go with the 600r or a Honda. They also seem to be the easiest to ride. It might not be the best idea to start on a 600, but as long as you respect the bike, you'll be alright. I was like you and had a lot of off road experience, but it's a whole new ballgame with sportbikes. After a few hundred miles of riding though, you'll be much more comfortable on it anyway. Just be careful at first. In the long run, you'll be glad you went with the 600 and not something smaller.

I just bought my very first bike in April. A 2002 Suzuki GSX-R750. I had never even ridin one. I took my time and now feel very comfortable on it. A 600 is probably an easier bike to start off on but you may get bored with it. I'm already looking at trding my 750 for a 1000.

I also took an MSF course which was very helpful

first bike

dude,i traded in my yzf and i now own a 750 gsxr that i love. i have ridden other sport bikes since i began street riding 1.5 yrs ago. from a r6 to a r1 and even a wheelieing '02 busa. i used to own an '01 yzf 600r. it was a nice bike, but given what it costs versus what you get in comparisn to an r6, gsxr600, zx600r, it's not worth it! i grew to hate mine after riding friend's bikes, and was happy to take the loss when i traded it in on my gsxr 750.

the yamaha is slow, can't wheelie (i know, i broke my chain puller clutching it in 1st) and runs like crap at low speeds (traffic) due to poor factory jetting. it does get great fuel economy and is cheaper on insurance rates w/some companies.

my buddy got a r6 for his first bike, and has been fine with it. be careful thouth, it is a wheelie machine. he also rode my yzf and disliked it too. if you compare the prices, the r6 is a deal since it is only about 1k more than a yzf.

My first "street" bike was a cbr 600 f4 at the age of 16 So i think you could handle a 600 at 21 if you've had atleast "off-road" experience. I doubt you'll get sick of any 600 too fast. The only thing would be if it fits you. Being 6'1 and 200 lbs, a 600 might be a little cramped for ya. You should go to the dealer and find a bike that feals comfortable thats not too big. Take it easy

If you have the money to get it go for a max of 1500 on that bike and if the clutch really is slipping, get a new one for about 400-600, have fun and great deal, let me know if you don't want it.

i was briefly contemplating getting a cbr, also a gsx r or a yamaha yzf all 600's all 97's, thats my price range 3500-4500, I think I'm going with the yamaha, i havn't heard a bad thing about them, so many peole have said don't get a 600 as a first bike but I'm 6,1 200 lbs I think a 600 would be just right and the yam has a much more comfy seat

Well, this whole time ive thought that id just start out with a 250, ride/ learn on it for a few months, then sell it and upgrade to a 600 size.

But today i went back to the local kaw dealership and they had a new 250 and 500 in, i have never sat on/seen up close a 250 or 500. So i sit on the 250....no good...waaay to small (for my likeing) i felt like i was sitting on a moped or soemthing, i didnt like it, i didnt like it at all...

So i have decided (even though its not the best idea) that i will be getting a 600 size bike as my 1st. I duno which yet, its all between the cbr, yzf, and zx-6 or maybe zx-6r. the one i have liked most so far is the r6 however, but i prob wont have one as my first bike. And yes of course i will be taking the ms course, and wear all proper protection.

So there ya have it, my bad decision.

Sorry if I sound ignorant.

But how can one become bored when riding a 600cc sportbike. A scooter or 125cc I can see, but not a fast trotting 600. For after all they are a replica of the present day road racers with more power, better handeling & far superior stopping power to the factory road racers in the 80s.
Besides what has one to look forward to a few yrs from now if they have bought a m/c with such a maze of power like a 750 or 1000cc sportbike?
I have a Yamaha YZF600r & love it since the day I purchased it in '97, but then I also have a Honda 929--note though that I have been riding m/cs since 1946!!!
Guess what is the lst bike I pull out in the Spring & last to be put away when winter comes along PLUS the one I will use on many of the not to good back roads? YES it is the YZF600r due to its easy to ride & handle.
