Ok, I've donned my flame-suit so feel free to let me know how you feel.
After following the advice of the forum I got an '02 SV650s (I know, not supposed to get a new bike). I really enjoyed that bike, it was very comfortable and forgiving while I got the newbie shakes out of my system. For the record, I got my motorcycle license and MSF course done the week after I bought my SV. I never laid the bike down or did any of the silly first-timer drops etc hehe. I read all the threads here to know what to avoid.
However, despite my previous good sense in following the forums advice, I ran out last week and traded my SV for a 2002 Suzuki GSX-R600. I love how the bike looks, how it screams at me (loud factory exhaust!), and how silllllky smooth the power is. Those are the reasons I bought it, not the best of reasons but not the worst either.
I've got just about 250 miles on the new bike and I'm still in love. The fuel injection makes it very predictable and forgiving during low RPM cruising around town. The bike is very light, lighter even than the SV was, and that makes it a little wobbly in heavy wind blast (darn truckers hehe) but nothing that isn't easily manageable. I don't know why but it also seems to track better in corners (perhaps the wider rear tire + better suspension?), letting me experiment a little more as I increase my skills though right now I'm being very cautious (as I was on the SV).
I miss the comfort of my SV, but having put in an hour and a half cruise on the Gixxer I know it can be done with only a few extremities going numb and tingly.
At any rate, just thought I'd bring you guys up to date and try to reassure you I'm not becoming a squid. For the record, I took the SV up to a higher speed than I have the GSX-R yet, though I'm finding myself better at holding my line in a corner on the Gixxer.
The one thing that amuses me is everyone I pass, be it a cager or another bike, they all motion for me to do a wheelie. Doesn't matter if I'm at a red light or cruising on the freeway, I get at least 3 or 4 people a night. See my sig for my response to that hehe.
Isn't she perty?
