1995 or so. check out the bandit 400, way cooler, made about 1991-1994 (roughly left when the 600 came). the 400 had trellis (sp?) frame like a ducati.

FYI, the Bandit 400 was in North America from 1991 to 1993. It proved to be unpopular due to it's naked-ness and low displacement.
Hell'uva bike though. It had a more advanced powerplant than a same model year GSXR- the Bandit 400 was liquid cooled from the git go... GSXR750 water pumper didn't show until 1993.
A good beginner's bike... a touch hard to find but big grins for years. Teaches good clutch/throttle modulation.
14,000rpm redline didn't hurt, either.
Didn't have the legs of a Bandit 600, though.

My first bike was a 91 Bandit 400 with the mini upper fairing. Good first bike. Used to spank the EX500 pretty good
