Good bikes cheap will probably lead you to the smaller used bikes. The Ninja 250's and 500's are good ones to start on and can be had for very cheap. Suzuki also has a 500, but I don't know about the availability of used ones as I've never looked into them.
Do a search on first bikes in the New Members area or the New Riders areas and you'll find lots of good information.
As far as where to find a bike there are any number of places to look. Cycletrader, your local newspaper classifieds, the classifieds on this site, dealers, etc. Look around a bit and don't just jump on the first thing you see. Be careful and look for prior damage from wrecks, signs of poor maintenance, or anything else. Looking around will also give you a feel for pricing as well. You can also find pricing at
for just about any year, make, and model bike.
Still try to get into the MSF as soon as you can though!
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all of fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomanical, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. - Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion
