Cool

I saw a black/red Bimota at the local bike shop that was like $22k. What is so special about his bike, and what exactly is it? Just wondering what the deal is with it.

Later,

Sounds like maybe the SB8R, with the TL 1000 motor in it.

Go to Bimota's website and check it out.

Of course, you'll let us know if you figure it out, right?

You pretty much described any Bimota.
The Bimota formula is: Start with a motor supplied by Suzuki/Yamaha/Ducati, tweak a few more HP from it, build a lighter, stronger frame for it, add the best suspension available, and price it between $18-22K. If they ever can raise the capital, the goal is to produce their own bike from the ground up. Yes, they did this already (VDue) but not quite successfully.

The SB8R is a nice one. I love the looks of the VDue.

We were discussing Bimota last night in SBW chat room. I wonder why Bimota never used a Kawi engine or a Honda engine.

What are your thoughts on this?

I have one theory that they(Kawi and Honda) wouldn't let them(or pressured) or maybe it has something to do with the two companies sportbikes are typically well balanced and there isn't much you can improve on to make them worth $20K on the street. I'm thinking the Manufacturer pressure is the likely scenario. Who knows?

i do believe the first bimota was a kb1. i think there were three (not sure that any were street bikes), not sure, i'm no bimota expert.

as for honda, the answer can be--

honda is so good no room to improve
honda is so reliable it could never be italian
or they wanted motors that can make power.

sorry john, had to do that last one.

Tony,

LOL! That last one was a good one. I'll get you back though.

Thanks for the info on the Kawi Bimota.

They are really limited in their choices now since bikes like the R1s and 929s are so light, powerful and handle well. Not a lot of room for improvement there. A lightened ZX-9R powered Bimota would be interesting.

I just looked on the Bimota page. Their first one was a Honda powered street bike called, get this, HB1. It was powered by a CB750 engines. Made 10 of them.

A couple of years later they did produce a KB1 with a Kawi Z900 engine. Made 827 of them.

There's more on the Past Models pages. Very interesting bikes.

Cool

I also remember one (KB2?) with a GPz550 motor in it. I'll have to check out the past models page...

Cool

I have a Bimota DB3 Mantra which comes in Red/Black combo but I don't think they'd be listing it at $22K. Mines Yellow/black combo.

It's got the Ducati 904cc engine powering it. I love it! Great road bike.

I had a 1997 SB6R (GSXR 1100 motor) and a 2000 SB8R Special (TL1000R motor) both bikes had serious fuel injection problems that drove me crazy. It was hard to find someone that would work on them. The SB8RSpecial would have to be warmed up 15-20 minutes before it would run. The SB6R had constant stumbles when you rolled on the throttle. I had several different mechanics try to get them to run but I was never satisfied with the results. I finally gave up on Bimota and sold both of them.
Good Riddens Bimota!!
