I haven't taken any time to do research, but it may be a Gilera 4 from the early 50's.

This is a four like the Gilera, but it isn't a Gilera. It was designed to compete with them though...
Maybe the Gilera was a better bike, but this one is harder to find :cool
Aris

PS. How do you like this trivia Andy?

Very good Trivia Aris.

I looked a little yesterday. I've excluded Gilera and MV Agusta. It looks like an Italian motorcycle.

Aris... you did it again. Another fantastic trivia! I only wish there was more information on the internet regarding this and similar rare motorcycles. I would assume there is information in books and magazines, but I'm not into purchasing that type of media. I guess I'll have to go to the museum in France.

No Andy, YOU did it again!!! I still wonder how you can find the answer Was it because I mentioned it wasn't Italian?
Congratulations!

Here is some history on this bike:
Jean Nougier, one of the best mechanics of France built this bike to compete with the Gileras and MV Agustas in 1953. It's the only 4 cylinder racing motorcycle built in France.
The aluminium tank was formed by hand by Jean Nougier himself, is made of the front bonnet from a Citroen DS!
